Tonight is pref at MS State, Saturday is Bid Day I have very little information this year, we have only talked to my cousin once. Unlike last year, she has no free time. Wednesday night they were in voting until 4am (she actually said she liked being a rushee better). I do know that during work week AOPi worked with KD and everyone had a great time. The members of KD are very excited about AOPi colonizing at MS State. If I understood correctly, AOPi was participating in the first two days of rush... for Ice waters (introductions). Then stepping out and beginning rush events after school starts!

I understand that AOPi is getting the AGD house, which I might add is beautiful!!!! I think they will have a very successful rush/colonization!!!

i'm glad to hear things are going so well. i know numerous girls going through rush down there this fall. they graduated last year and pretty much all my good friends were seniors so i'm really exited for them. hope to hear from them soon.

Hi.

Just wondering if anyone had heard any good news lately about AOII at Miss. State?

MFC2002 09-24-2003 01:48 PM

It is my understanding that AOPi has decided to close the colony at Miss State and will not be installing a chapter on the campus.

OleMissGlitter 09-24-2003 03:58 PM

Yes, and to quote another AOII, "Apparently, the numbers just weren't there. I am sorry to see this happen but I would rather them do it now then start a colony or a chapter and struggle later on with numbers."

I think it was a wise choice. I think there is a need for another sorority at MSU, just like there is here at Ole Miss, but it might not be the right time since another GLO struggled down there recently.

However, the Fraternity's best interest had to be considered and the correct decision was made. This should, if anything, strengthen the belief that AOII is still conservative in its recruitment process and will settle for nothing other than the best.

My praises go out to all of the AOIIs who helped at MSU. I know they worked very hard and tried their best.

Here is an article in the Reflector regarding the colonization. FYI: there are six NPC chapters on campus: XO, Tri Delta, DG, KD, Phi Mu, and ZTA. Chapter size runs between 161-208 members.

Alpha Omicron Pi backs out colonization

by Dustin Barnes, The Reflector
September 26, 2003

A sorority that had planned to found a chapter at Mississippi State University this semester backed out of the plan last week.

The sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi, had previously announced last spring that it would join the other Greek sororities this fall.

Kate McIntosh, president of Chi Omega, said that the prospective sorority had been interviewing and meeting with female students.

The colonization date for the organization was set for mid-September, but the sorority did not meet its desired quota by that date.

Hollye Raines, president of the Panhellenic Council, said that the sorority had extended its colonization date for a few weeks in hopes of recruiting more women. The number Alpha Omicron Pi had at the time was not enough to compete with the number of women in other sororities.

"They had about 40 women interested in the sorority," Raines said. "They would like to at least double that number and have around 80 to 100."

McIntosh said the Greek community had helped to recruit more members for the sorority. The national organization of Alpha Omicron Pi just found it difficult to obtain a large number of women in order to compete with the other established sororities.

Raines said that the members of the Greek community did not blame Alpha Omicron Pi for anything, and that Alpha Omicron Pi did not blame the members of the community.

"We are very sorry that our attempts to bring Alpha Omicron Pi to campus did not materialize this fall," said Holli Hitt, a member of the Panhellenic Council. "This was completely a situation of unfortunate timing-starting a sorority colony is a huge financial investment for AOPi, and there was simply not a large enough group of women interested in AOPi to make this a good move for the national organization at this time.," Hitt added.

Raines said the women that had expressed interest in joining the sorority are still interested in the group.

The women started a social club to try to recruit more people. Once a suitable number of women have been acquired, then the club hopes to go before the Panhellenic Council and restart the process of founding a new Alpha Omicron Pi chapter at MSU.

"We feel hopeful that this group is very adamant about starting the colony," Raines said. "We're very supportive of them, and we do try to stay optimistic about the whole situation."

Raines said the women interested in the new sorority must first meet the requirements set by that specific organization.

Then the national office of the sorority would have to grant an official charter to the group. Once the women had the charter, the group would become an official sorority of the MSU Panhellenic Council.

"While I regret that the colonization process was put on hold, that regret is greatly dwarfed by my excitement over the relationships that were formed and the friendships that emerged from this process. I have never been more proud of the Panhellenic community and their ready acceptance of a new organization. The support that each of our sororities showed for AOPi has been amazing."

Although my heart aches that the colony has been closed, this gives me much faith in the Panhellenic efforts at MSU. Good luck to all of the groups who supported our efforts, and thank you from the bottom of my heart.
