All-college dance?
 

It is a sad day when I'm getting thread ideas from the covers of Sorority Sisters (LOL CutiePie2000) but the one about the "school dance" made me think of this. Did any of your colleges have school-wide events that were like a prom or formal? All we had were the individual sorority and fraternity formals.

My alma mater (Georgetown) actually had quite a few school-wide dances.

The most famous is "Dip Ball" short for "Diplomat's Ball." Basically, the School of Foreign Service sponsors it every year and invites all of the diplomats in Washington to attend. I never went because tickets were so expensive.

I think the second most popular ball is the Homecoming Ball. I attended my Freshman and Junior years, and it was sponsored by the Program Board.

There was Charity Ball, which benefits a few community service groups at school.

Senior Ball happens the night before graduation in the Great Hall at Union Station.

I'm not sure, but I think that in the past few years, the other schools at the University have jumped on the Ball (hehehe)....I know for sure that there is a College Ball (Arts and Sciences)...there may have been a Nurses Ball and a Business Ball, too.

Lots of balls, you say? Well, my school didn't have a Greek system, so there were more school-sponsored social outlets.

My older sister graduated from A&M. I don't remember the name of the formal she went to.. maybe Kitso can correct me if I'm wrong, but they have a Ring Dance (or something like that?)

I think it's to celebrate the seniors getting their A&M graduation ring.

Homecoming...right in the middle of Feburary...yup.

When I was at the University of North Texas they had a formal. I think I wore my prom dress. But not many people attended. And after that one, I didn't go again.

we have campous activity board that has a ballroom in one of the buildings and sometimes they have a dj. No one ever goes to them.

Our Student Gov't and the Campus Activity Board to a lot of "parties" for the student body. Apparently, a party consists of a live band and free food. I've actually seen a fair number of people show up to these things.

We have the Charity Ball, which kicks off Homecoming Week. I think there's another formal/semi-formal dance in the spring -- the profits from it benefit the Make A Wish Foundation, but I can't remember which campus group sponsors it. Neither of these are really fancy or "formal" though -- you're supposed to drag your oldl prom dress out of your closet, not go out and buy a new one. There are a couple of less formal dances too, one during All Campus Party in the spring and one, I think, during the Memorial Union Bash in the fall. None of them are as fancy as sorority and fraternity formals, as far as I know, though.

My little college had a Spring Formal every year. I went the first two years, and then I realised that this was the cheesiest event good old Villa Julie College had come up with. It seemed like more faculty than students were at these things. Ah, the joys of going to a small, private college! ;)

My college was divided into residential areas (containing four to six dorms) some of which had spring formals. I never attended one though.

Aww I want an all college formal or dance Im almost positive we dont have any.. at least Ive never heard of one. We are always having bands play out on the quad but no dancey type functions...hmm maybe I should contact out SGA for this one ;)

A&M has 2, Boot Dance and Ring Dance.

Boot dance is held at the end of the year for the class that is juniors that year. Mine was held, spring of '00. It's a tradition from A&M's days as a military school. Senior Cadets wear specially crafted english riding boots with their uniforms. The uniforms resemble the US Army cav uniforms, circa 1940's. Boot dance is a celebration for juniors, who get to wear their boots for the first time.

Ring dance is held the fall of your classes senior year. Mine was Fall of '00. It's meant to coinicide with you obtaining your Aggie Ring. The Aggie Ring is one of the most identifyable symbols of an Ag, as the design of the ring hasn't changed since the late 1800's. Anywhere you go in the world, you can tell an Ag by the gold on their hand. You can't just buy an Aggie ring, you can only order one after you've completed 95 hours (60 @ A&M if you're a transfer) and are classified as a senior. The rings are specially made by Balfour and ordered through our Association of Former Students.

Ring Dance is a school-wide formal to celebrate this accomplishment. Couples take their pictures under the giant replica of an Aggie Ring.

I went to Boot Dance, but not Ring Dance. I figured that i really didn't need to drop a lot of money on tickets, dinner, and a picture for a girl that i probably wouldn't see again after graduation. I dunno, maybe if i'd had a gf at the time i'd have seen the point. I saved my money instead and went to our formal in Laredo that spring. I think i made the better choice.

We have winter ball (more formal... like a prom) and fall ball (less formal.. .like a homecoming) which is held in a huge, beautiful historical mansion located on our campus.
