celeb endorsements -- what do you think?

my friend is learning about this in her summer marketing class.

It just makes me wonder though, are you really interested in seeing a singer on a UPN sitcom (ahem, Eve) or in a summer comedy (Beyonce). Do you like it when your favorite actor/singer/whoever does some cross over work into a different medium?

This crossover thing is crazy because of it I not only have to deal with J. Lo's singing and acting but it all started with her dancing on In Livin' Color. And Shaq just cause you can dunk a basketball doesn't mean i should fork over my hard scrilla and watch you horrible movie or buy your moronic cd. I am not sure but I can't think of a cross over that i have liked.

Sorry, not really impressed by "big name" endorsements by all these "current" stars. I'd be more impressed by the Kate Hepburn type endorsements where you know when they say they really like/use something, they really do say it because they like it, not because they're getting $$$$ to smile and say whatever the card says.

On the other hand, A-list celebrities that don't need much for name recognition don't usually do commercial endorsements in the USA. However, they readily snap up the chance to go do it in Japan. Check out http://www.japander.com/ for more...

I can respect celebrities who cross over, only if they're just as good as their company... ie., if Mandy Moore was as good as Shane West in A Walk to Remember, then I can respect her for that... but she just wasn't. Personally, I think I've been saturated with Beyonce... she's everywhere (not that it's not part of her job, it is to promote her album and movie)... but I liked the Britney Pepsi commercials a lot better than hers (not that either celebrity would persuade me to buy Pepsi over Coke, I like both equally because I can't tell the difference!)... sorry for the ramble. Anyway, I liked Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard... didn't like Eminem in 8 Mile... didn't mind Britney in Crossroads... hated Lance and Joey in On The Line (only saw it on cable). And yeah I could care less if my favorite star is endorsing a product... I like Mandy Moore, but I'm not going to start using Neutrogena if I like Cetaphil.

the thing is. . .we have stupid little teenyboppers who buy anything that they see a superstar using. . .

that's where celebrity endorsements come in. . .the market is all for kids who can get their spineless parents to pay for those $1000 Oakleys that A-Rod is sporting in the Dallas area. . .

and this is why our society is going down the tubes. . .

can you imagine brittney or justin doing a metamucil or depends ad when she's older?

*giggles*

lol @ White Chocolate!

"Hi, I'm Britney Spears. Its not easy to have abs of steel when you're 85, and sometimes I get bladder leakage when I do my tummy crunches."

okay, so is there any brand that really did (or would) seem cooler if a celeb was in their ads?

What about these new Gap ads with Missy and Madonna. Personally I think Madonna is way past her prime anyway but I think it's kind of cool that Missy E is in the ads. Makes me wonder if Gap is giving itself an edgier make over.

I seen the commerical last night. Have Madonna and Missy Elliot doing one together is a pretty good idea. just have to wait and see if it help or hurt the GAP's sales.

Missy, Missy, Missy. This was a BAD idea.

And Madonna needs to STOP - she thought she was so edgy and appealing to the "kids" with all the technocrap - now she thinks hanging with Missy will revive her career. How about releasing a song (not even a whole album, I'm not asking that much, just one song) that doesn't stink worse than a pig farm? Could you do that please?

The Limited Brands have been suffering for a while now. They are trying to bring people back to wearing Gap. The thing is when GAP started out. . .it was basically a jeans and khaki place with white t-shirts and jean jackets. Over the years, they have tried to bring more into the look that GAP has. . .but I don't know if they can do it.

If anything, it means that black people will be coming to the store more often. I could just see the GAP sales people having to become trained in how to pretend they aren't following them around. . .because we all know they do.

Personally, I'm not impressed with big name celebrities doing commercials, guest stints on television shows, etc.

honeychile 08-06-2003 12:02 PM

I don't care if a celebrity endorses a product. I just hope that they're not stupid enough to think that I'm more apt to buy something because of a celebrity endorsement.

madmax 08-06-2003 01:28 PM

Hillary Duff (Lizzy Maguire) is going to release an album. It doesn't bother me if celebs cross over as long as they are actually talented at what they are doing but most of them just plain suck.
