Which Side Are You On?

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HUMMMM?

DOES ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA MAKE YOU, OR DO YOU MAKE ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA? WHICH SIDE BEST DESCRIBES YOU, AND WHY?

AKA2D '91 08-06-2000 11:05 AM

Soror,

I MAKE ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA!

Before I became a member in 1991, I already had a SENSE OF SELF. My parents did a wonderful job in making my sister and I aware of many things...exposing us to many areas. Therefore, with that knowledge we were able to find out/ know who we both were...so, when I became a Soror, that was lagniappe ( something extra). The SORORITY DOES NOT DEFINE ME or MAKE ME, it's JUST THE OPPOSITE...

This is something that should be taken into consideration when we bring in members, regardless of the organization...many times people join organizations for the wrong reason(s)! This is why we have so many issues plaguing us.

By the way, Soror, you are in my region (if you are still in Texas)...email me sometimes... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I agree with Soror AKA2D. I could not have said it better.

Ditto. I think we have all witnessed the person that joins a BGLO, and then "change" (for the worse). Before I pursued membership, I already knew that this would not happen to me because I was already self-confident and knew who I was.

We are Blessed!

There are too many out there who have an identity crisis...It's sad!

Greetings ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, I must always give you respect because without you there would be no me.

I'm just peeping in to say "HAY" to my best friend, TX_AKAQT08. I told her that she needed to become a participant in GreekChat.com.

Take care, Ladies. And this is a good topic.

I make AKA. Its the sweat and sacrifice of sorors that keep AKA going. A big problem today is that some have no life outside of their organizations, the frat/soror makes them, its their claim to fame, their security, yes our organizations are dear to us, but how sad is it not to have your own identity. there is division among us that is not necessary simply because some black folks have the "i'm better than you complex" pledge vs non pledge drama etc. that mentality should have gone out with lynching, oh well i guess somethings never change.

Do I really need to answer this, I would be doing my mother and my family a great injustice if I claimed AKA makes me - I grew to be 20 something years old without Alpha Kappa Alpha, I must admit I admired AKA at a distance and at times I aligned myself with some of the goals that AKA as a whole was trying to reach but I never needed to or had the want to alter myself, I love who I am and who my mom raised me up to be, anything else would be silly.

But Soror PositivelyAKA made a great point, people do hide behind the colors, and that is a shame (there is more to be said but I will hold off)!!

No disrespect. Just curious.

How can one have a sense of self at 18/19?

AKA2D '91 04-21-2002 10:38 PM

Parents were/are DA FREAKIN' BOMB!

The SAME way one can have a sense of self at 40/50.

no offense taken...

One must have had a good childhood then.

Well, you all are right, that's a blessing. To know who you are and where you're going at such a young age.

This is a good topic!

Even if the organization really did make the person --- do you really think that they would come on a forum such as this and disclose that information?

We all like to think that we make our perspective organizations, or we wouldn't have joined in the first place -- at least I hope that's the school of thought.

Please realize that people join for many different reasons: for fame, glory, recognition, sister/brotherhood, or to actually do the WORK at hand. Regardless of the reason we are all sisters and brothers and should be treated as such. Hopefully those that joined for 'fame', 'glory', or 'recognition' would finally realize the true meaning of our organizations. Eventually they will grow and understand what our founders were fighting so hard to obtain.

It saddens my heart to see all of these Tee-shirt wearers out here claiming and proclaiming, but not doing the real work. I don't know about any of you, but the real work began AFTER I crossed those burning sands (and I bled, sweated and cried for DST - literally).

So just in case your organization does makes you -- it is still time for evolution/revolution, because Membership in a BGLO is a lifetime commitment!;)

A GLO, job, man, etc. ITSELF cannot make a person. However I believe that it can be a PIECE of the puzzle that makes a person.
