GOP CONVENTION
What are your thoughts on the GOP convention so far?

Nupe, is it just me or does there seem to be a strong minority presence? I watched it 2 nights ago and one of the speakers was a Baptist minister and his congregation via satellite.
I heard on Good Morning America that when Colin Powell spoke last time, he was boo'd. Well, we know that the Republicans lost the last presidential election. At a glance, it seems as if this time, they are really trying to influence the minority vote (note ***this is my opinion). I tend to vote Democrat, but I'm still reviewing both sides. ------------------ >>>"Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all." I am not inclined to be influenced either way by conventions. I think that the Republican Convention is attempting to present the picture of an integrated party, a picture that does not hold up under the slightest scrutiny.
I was watching Tavis's show tonight and one of the things that they point out is that the percentage of minorities represented on the stage is ten times the percentage of minority delegates at the convention, but let's not get started on statistics. One thing that tonights show did which has not occured in the past few days of the convention--that I really appreciated-- was give me a little insight into the minds of black people wihin the republican party. I still don't agree with Bush. I do not care for the political records that he, his vice presidential candidate, or even his vice president's wife have established for themselves and these are the things that will heavily influence my decision when I vote. My opinion has not in the least bit been swayed by this bit of shameless orchestration. |
All I have to say is goooo Al Gore. The republican party did a lot of trash talking last night about Gore through Clinton's past mistakes but, truthfully Clinton has done more for blacks that any other President I have seen and if his Vice-President agreed to that that he will do the same while in office.
If Bush get's in office, we (blacks) have no chance. Pinkice |
Did anyone see the interview with George W. Bush's father, former president Bush? Anyway, it seems as if he still is upset that he lost to Clinton.
Anyway, I am an Independent voter. I am liberal, but I do have some Conservative views (welfare, handouts, etc). I tend to vote Democrat. I do think that the GOP convention is a "show" for the party. AL Sharpton made a comment on Geraldo's show on MSNBC the other night regarding the Republican's "Broadway" show (it was to that effect). And that most of the MINORITY (black) delegates were on the stage giving speeches. They even had a brutha (maybe in this case a brother) on stage during the roll call. But, did you all notice how Colin Powell has gone "against" the parties ideology regarding AFFIRMATIVE ACTION? That will be interesteing... If the parties decision to be more "inclusive" is LEGIT and SINCERE, then they MAYbe victorious in November. If this is a SHOW, maybe they will get it in 2004. Oh, that choir sang one of my favorite PRAISE PERIOD PIECES..."I Have a Testimony..." |
This Convention has been a very interesting one. I'm a registered Democrat but personally, Al Gore hasn't impressed me yet. I really think he's sleeping on George W. Bush. Those 8 years in the White House don't mean a lot to people. He has to come out and get from under President Clinton's shadow. And also I don't think it helps him that Clinton is publicly bashing George W. Clinton has done enough. I mean besides his sexual escapades he's been a good President. His only mistake was that he got caught. Y'all know that President's have been doing this kinda stuff since Jesus was a child.
Anway, I've been checking out the Convention. Did anyone see Tavis Smiley ( my frat YO-YO) show last night? He had Condaleeza Rice and other blacks that have spoken at the convention. I do think that it's time for a change in this county. I usually vote independently. But this show that the Republicans have been putting on is making me ill. I mean they are overdosing on it. If they are sincere, I think that they're just making the mistake of trying to show it. At the same time, it's like it's all a show. Can you feel me. And yeah all of these prominent blacks are making great speeches. Colin Powell is a role model for all Americans. But I must ask you to take a look at how many African Americans are actually delegates. Like 4% I think. Well those are my thoughts. George W. speaks tonight and I'll be tuned in. And my scrutiny and criticisms are not reserved only for Republicans. When the Democrats get together in LA i'll be tuned in to that also. And already, I have a question. I mean I heard this thing was gonna be a star studded affair. Why? I don't wanna see some movie star on tv pretending to be a soon to be unwed father who's struggling to put himself through college. Can you feel me? I heard all the stars are coming out for that one. That's probably why LA is the venue. ------------------ KAPPA ALPHA PSI FRATERNITY, INC. SPR 97 XI LAMBDA |
I believe that one of the reasons that tinsel town will be showing support for Gore, is not because they pretend to empathize with our struggles, but because a conservative administration would be very hard on the movie and television industry. There are already political machines that want to censor what is going on in Hollywood most of them with strong ties to the Republican party.
I think that it is really important that we all consider the records of each of these prospective candidates. Let's not look at what they say they are going to do, but what they have done in the past. Sexy Mocha already posted some of Cheney's (sp?) congressional voting record on the Alpha under the thread "Presidential Hope" thread I believe. Check it out. If I new how to copy and post it here I would. Campaign promises, particularly from a Bush (yes, I went there), don't seem to mean much. Everyone remember, "Read my lips, no new taxes!" Remember what happened just a few short years later. That's all for now. I am sure I will be back. [This message has been edited by Little32 (edited August 03, 2000).] |
NUPE4LIFE I am so glad you brought up this topic, I have much to say but much work to get done first ... I actually wanted to reintroduce the post by KreamyNupe titled "My Wordz, My Thoughts, Our Wisdom!" but someone must have deleted it (why I don't know)... anyway I will start by saying pinkice9 you are so right we as blacks have no chance if Bush is elected, I can't begin to give details about all the blacks being legally killed in Texas RIGHT NOW!!
Anyway, I will be back to write more!! Say blessed and please get registered to VOTE |
This morning after I made the first post, I was listening to the Tom Joyner show.
Bebe Winans was being interviewed about his new CD coming out. Anyway, they talked about the various artist he worked with on the project. Brian McKnight was one of the artist. So, the topic went from the CD to Bryan's appearance at the convention. Bebe said, he told Brian that he did not know that McKnight was a republican. I don't think he is...anyway, Bebe said that his reply was if the Democrats wanted him at their convention, he would be there, too. The catch was was that he was PAID to do that. It was another gig for him. I wonder if it was the same for The Rock? I was like, uh huh! NOW, I SEE! There was a joke that the announcer at the convention introduced him as Brian Knight and not McKnight. They went on to joke about if the check written was written out to Brian McKnight OR Brian Knight. That was very interesting.... YOU CAN'T ALWAYS BELIEVE WHAT YOU SEE! |
I have watched bits and pieces of the convention. I agree with a lot that has been said here already. There is a very strong minority presence, but my vote can not and will not be given away just because they parade several black faces across the tv screen.
I also watched Al Sharpton's appearance on Geraldo's show. I agree with him completely when he stated that they can put on this great showcase of minorities, but what about after the convention and beyond? I think it is a good start if they are sincere, but I will not be mislead by a temporary show of affection. I'm just waiting for Al Gore to announce his running mate, and hopefully some kind of momentum will pick up. Right now, I'm not impressed either. |
we are going to have to start a thread on the Democrats when the convention starts.
|
Oh, most definitely!
|
I think Al Gore will follow in his predecessor's (Clinton's) footsteps. If you want to see some of the things that Clinton is doing, click below:
http://www.cnn.com/2000/LAW/08/03/cl...eut/index.html I hope this moves someone to vote for Gore. ------------------ Celebrate life, in all its amazing glory!!! |
Very Interesting...Very interesting!
