question

First sorry for crashing your board but I have a question that has been bothering me for a while, and I though one of you might know the answer.

Who is allowed to wear your crest? The reason I ask this is because one of the RA's at my school was wearing a shirt that had ADPi's crest on it one day. There is no ADPi chapter on my campus so I was surprised and confused, since I have known her since my freshman year and I didn't think that she had transfered there. When I asked her about it she was very casual and said "oh, I'm a legacy so it's ok. It was my mom's in the 70's and I thought it was cute." Since this is not my sorority I let it drop, but it bothered me. Sigma Kappa only allows initiated members to wearthings like that. I have seen cute tees for toddlers that say SK legacy or future Sig Kap, but I would think that after they grow a little they wouldn't wear that anymore. Especially at college if they are not members, least of all our crest.

So my question boils down to, is this ok with your org? I was just a little irritated that she would misrepresent herself as possibly a member of ADPi (or anyother sorority, even if she is a legacy).

Thanks!
Annie

Your RA is sadly mistaken. Wearing the crest of Alpha Delta Pi, just like any other GLO, is the exclusive privilege of initiated sisters. And her mother surely should know better!

actually, though our hq does allow alphas to wear letters, the crest (coat of arms) IS restricted to only initiated sisters... *even alphas* are technically not allowed to wear or display the crest until after diamond days and initiation.

adpi has a wonderful program which emphasizes that every sister, whether "pledge" or initiate, is an equal member with full privileges and responsibilities of daily membership-- this is actually the *only* thing that hq says alphas cannot do (that doesn't directly pertain to ritual).

To clear up I wasn't asking about people who are pledged but about legacies. This girl has never pledged ADPi, she is only a legacy and wears the shirt that she got from her mom. I just thought that it was a little odd that she would do this since she doesn't know the significance. It might also lead others to believe she is a member (at another school since we don't have a chapter).

Non-initiated legacies are still NOT initiated members of Alpha Delta Pi, and are not entitled to wear the crest.

They may own one, as an item that their mother or whomever owned, but they may not wear or use it.

I don't feel comfortable telling her out of the blue but I will pass on this message if I see her wearing the shirt again.

I am glad that I was not overeacting.
