Tips for Living in the House?
Hey everyone!
I move into the DG house a week from tomorrow!! First year rushers have to be moved in by the 5th because we have a Rush workshop the 6th. Then work/spirit week is the 7th-11th, the 12th is our Free day and then rush starts the 13th! Any ways, although I'm excited about living in the house, I'm nervous/scared. I worried I won't get along with everyone. I mean, I like most of my sisters(really, there are only about 2 or 3 who I just don't get along with), but last year I just hung out with them at DG events, with a few exceptions. I'm worried that all the "Drama" that goes with living with 60 girls(My big says there is always drama in the house) will get on my last nerve. I lived in a dorm last year, 30 girls on a hall. BUt I kept to myself and hung out with friends who lived in different halls/dorms. So, Any suggestions? |
House Tips
I totally understand how you feel. I was really nervous about moving into the house at first. Yes, there will be drama and yes your sister's will probably get on your nerves. Just keep a cool head and try to stay out of the drama and any situations that might throw you into it with out you realizing it. Also, keep an eye on your stuff. When you're living with a lot of other people sometimes things get mixed up. Despite all the crud that comes with it living in the house is sooo much fun!:) and well worth any of the frustration. You'll get closer to the sisters you're living with. Good luck with living in the house and recruitment it's so fun.

I lived in the house for 2 years... I could have moved into an apartment my senior year, but thought that I have the rest of my life to live in an apartment/own house, but I'll never get this opportunity to live in a sorority house. It takes some getting used to-- living with all girls when my dorm that I lived in the previous 2 years had a girls' side and a boys' side on my floor. Yes, there will be drama, but that's to be expected... I stayed out of it. There will be times when girls are loud... but it never really bothered me because I usually went to bed around 3am. I definitely agree with SonatinaDG to keep track of your things. Girls are always borrowing each others clothes, movies, and other random things that they may pass them onto other sisters and then you have to track them down. You should make the most of your experience living in the house... it goes by too fast. The last night I was in the house I was sitting in the living room and realized that I didn't spend enough time just lounging around on the sofas talking... so don't be too nervous, it'll be fun!

UGAnchora, you'll loving living in our Delta Iota house! Which room are you in? I lived in 201, the 4-girl room right over the dining room. I was really nervous when I first moved in, especially for work week and rush, because I'm a person who needs my "alone time" and I thought I might go crazy stuck in the house all day with the whole chapter. But those weeks were the best and it sounds so cliche but it really brought us all closer together.
Like others have said, just try to avoid the inevitable drama. I found living in the house to be quieter (usually! ;)) than the dorm because most people have more respect for their sisters rather than strangers. Don't worry about the two or three girls that you don't get along with. It's a big house and most of the time everyone has such crazy schedules that you won't see them that much if you don't want to. :) The main thing to remember is to ENJOY EVERY MINUTE you're there because you'll never have this opportunity again! My best memories are from simply hanging out at the house. |

Yeah, I'm an "alone time" girl too. I think I'll be ok. I'm just worried the stress of Rush and stuff will make us all pissy! |
Wah! I wish we had a house! I would definitely live in it!:(

PSPGirl,
One of my best friends is in your chapter. I tease her all the time since she'll be living in the dorm this year after living in a nice apartment last year. :D But hey, I've heard the dorms are nice. Probably a LOT nicer than Brumby, the dorm I lived in! |
I loved living in the AOII house at Ole Miss. We house 45 girls and it was awesome. Everyone has one roommate, except the president who has a suite. Anyway, my only suggestion would be to put your name in your clothes. With so many girls in one place, there is going to be lots of clothes sharing so having your name in your clothes is a good idea. Also, make sure that if you are an officer you have "office time" posted on your door. This way you won't have people coming to you at all times of the day and night. I'm sure you will love it and it was the best experience I ever had. I moved in the beginning of my sophomore year and stayed till I graduated! I loved it!

Silly question: how many dorms does UGA have? Cause the only one I ever hear about is Brumby! |
If people are being loud when you're trying to sleep, don't be afraid to ask them to quiet down. Just don't be a snot about it.

You probably hear about Brumby the most because it houses 1000 girls, all of which are freshman and probably 80% are Greek. Right now, UGA has 17 dorms: All Girls: Brumby Soule Church Mell The Rest are Co-Ed: Hill Libscomb Boggs Reed O-House Russel Creswell McWhorter Payne Morris Mary Lyndon Rutherford Myers The Brumbs in all its "beauty" http://www.uga.edu/housing/tour/lgimgs/brumby.jpg The rooms are tiny, with bolted down desks and tin can closests and an itsy bitsy dresser. Yet, it is the most popular with freshman girls... |

201 is above the dining room with two windows overlooking the patio and one window toward Phi Mu. It has the partitions in it with three separate areas for desks, closets/dressers and sleeping area. My big lived in that room the year before me so I carried on the tradition! |
I decided to join in on the competition for "who has the ugliest dorm." Personally, I think all of ours beat out Brumby....
http://www.housing.sc.edu/bb.asp The frat quad is McBryde, and the sorority dorms are South Tower on that sheet. On another note, how do you post images? I have a new Mac, so mine might be different, but I tried posting the same way that I would post it for a website, and it didn't work.:-( I also tried clicking on the IMG. |
CarolinaDG, if you are referring to the "honeycombs" then Carolina definitely wins for ugliest dorm! :) I have always wondered what the view is like from inside of those things. The only dorm I have been inside there is Capstone when I was at Girls State.
