just a thought...

Hi Ladies,

I am a certified addict of greekchat. While at work I will stay on for about thirty minutes, then try to get work done, but it's back on the web again. I was wondering if anyone knows of an employee being monitored for how much time they are spending on the web? I read something about how your employer could trace the sites you have been on and everything. If someone has any knowledge of this could you tell me if an employee could be fired. I love greekchat, but I hafta pay the bills! What do you think?

Pink28,

At my job, I've heard of people being placed on Developmental Plans (not a good thing) for excessive internet activity.

I'm sure employers have sophisticated ways of tracking your activity, but sophisticated methods are not needed. You don't have to be a computer wiz to follow up on internet activity. There are several folders on your C-drive that have "internet logs." All your supervisor has to do is look at your internet history folder. It shows every place you've visited and the date and time.

You also probably have a Cookies folder on your c-drive that lists the sites you've visted (date and time).

Your temporary internet folder also shows recently visted sites.

Bottom line - be careful.

Nah, got that covered. You can erase you history folder.

You can erase your history, but those sites are still somewhere on your hard drive. On top of that webmasters can still track where you have visited on their computers. For instance if you work in an office that functions off of NT twice as ease to track employees. Everything that is put out over the internet can be traced at any given time. It's something like a web archive. So, you might erase it, but another computer maybe saving every site you visit without you knowing. . Be careful!

Pink28- If you work anywhere with a LAN connection, erasing the information on your computer is not going to help you out at all. All of that information (where you've been/what you've been doing) can be kept on your company's server. As a matter of fact, most network administrators can look at your login information and tell that you are looking at this site right now. If you aren't supposed to surf the net at work and you could get fired for it, then my advice is don't. Technology nowadays is like the proverbial Big Brother, you never know when he's watching!
