Question for Sigma Kappas
I was reading my mom's Sigma Kappa alum directory (she's from the Beta Upsilon chapter at Ohio U.) and it looks like you had three chapters (Alpha, Beta and Gamma) at Colby. Why were there three chapters at Colby and did they exist at the same time?
If this is secret info, let me know and I'll remove this thread. Thanks :) |
I'm pretty sure this is info we can post, but I'll wait for a go ahead from another sister, just in case

Hmmm I'd imagine there'd be no problems about posting this . . it is in our Promise book, and theoretically anyone could get their hands on that. It's not ritual.

OK. :D
When the Alpha chapter was established at Colby in 1874, there were not many women enrolled so the founders set enrollment at 25. As the years went on, more women were enrolled at Colby and Alpha chapter reached it's max membership. It was decided that Beta would open, also at Colby. When Beta's membership reached 25, it was decided that Gamma would be established. The founders then realized that for Sigma Kappa to flourish, the sorority would have to expand past the walls of Colby College. It was decided that (and help me out girls, I don't have my book in front of me) that no more would be initiated into Beta and Gamma chapters, and Alpha would be filled to maximum. Delta chapter was opened at Boston University and it was the first chapter to be established outside of Colby College. Did I do good?!?! Huh?? :D |
HEREHERE!
you did awesome! <3 |
Another interesting fact is that they all met together. Here's the whole thing off the history part of our national website.
In our first constitution, chapter membership was limited to 25. The original group was known as Alpha chapter and as our sorority grew, Beta chapter and Gamma chapter were also established at Colby College. Early records indicate that the groups met together; but in 1893, the Sigma Kappa members decided intramural expansion was not desirable. They voted to fill Alpha chapter to the limit of 25 and to initiate no more into Beta and Gamma chapters. Eventually, the second and third chapters would vanish from Colby campus. Finally Sigma Kappas realized if the organization was going to continue to grow, it had to expand beyond the walls of Colby College. |
thanks :)
