Running for Vice Archon

OK I need a little bit of help or suggestions...I was nominated for Vice Archon and I am running against 3 older sisters. However I really feel that I am qualified as much if not more than they are for the position. But our girls tend to focus on how long a sister has been in the chapter. So I guess I am asking for some things to include in my speech that would maybe grab their attention and prove that I am deserving of this position regardless of age. So any suggetions will be extremely appreciated.

PhiSigButterfly,

First off I just wanted to say good luck!! As curent Vice Archon of my chapter I can tell you that it's a great postion!! I think that in order to grab their attention you need to prove to them in your speech that you know what the job entails..and give them the qualities you have that prove you can do it. For example, the biggest thing I am looking for in a Vice Archon when we re- elect is the ability to juggle many different tasks, and also organization. As Vice Archon you have to run eboard meetings, take care of executive council, attend j-board meetings (as an ex-efficio) member and your in charge of Fraternity Education. In addition you also have to update the Constitution. So prove to them that you have the qualities to balance all of these tasks at once!! You also have to be organized to keep everything straight...so any proof you have of that will help also. I hope that helped at least a little.

Good Luck! I'm sure you will do an awesome job if elected!

vice archon

Hi everyone,

well we had nominations for Eboard tonight and I had sworn to myself that the only position I would even think about accepting a nomination for would have been Scribe. I was founding MOC (now SDC) and was Archon last academic year so I've really missed eboard this last year but at the same time its been nice just being on Exec Council as Alumnae Chair. I had especially said the one position on eboard I would never want to do was Vice Archon.

As you can guess I was nominated for Vice Archon (and Scribe too). After the person I nominated and almost everyone else that was nominated for VA declined the nomination I decided to keep my name in the running. The other sister is one of our members that was initiated at the end of October. Even though she's only just accepted her first e-council position I have no doubt that she would be able to handle VA duities and yet at the same time I'm hesitant since she hasn't held an eboard position before. My mother did point out to me as Founding sisters none of us had experience and yet we were all chosen for Eboard positions and I thought that was a very good point.

I would definitely be able to work great with either of the two sisters who were nominated for Archon. In fact one of them, the current Archon, was my Vice Archon when I was Archon. I guess I'm just sounding off here trying to figure out if I do want to keep my name in the running for VA or just Scribe (I already turned down Tribune as I take horrible minutes/notes).

Anyone out there who is Vice Archon - how stressful is/was it. What are your thoughts on it. And if you've been Archon and VA which did you actually find the most stressful? thanks for listening/reading.

LITP,
Carolyn

p.s. we just got the cutest tshirts to wear to division conference tomorrow. Its the greek letters but the round portion of the Phi is a heart shape. Our school name is below the Phi Sig Sig and then LITP in small letters below that.

i am now vice archon
and it can be stressful AT TIMES
you have people who will listen and do what you say
you have people who won't listen because you're not archon
you have people who don't want to work
you have people who do too much work
you have people who just want to party
you have people who want to party but need to know a month in advance
you have people who might party but their boyfriend said no
you have people who can do the work and planning
you have people who can do the work and planning but not today
you have people who think that they should be on antoher committee because they don't like that chair
you have people who love the chair but they don't like the others in the committee
you have chairs who lose binders and reports
you have chairs who put too much thought into binders and reports(packrats)

basically, you have your sisters. . .

nah, run for it. . .it'll be fun

Carolyn,
As you know, I was founding Vice Archon for our chapter... This was hell. I don't know if things have changed since I was in office, but the Vice Archon's position is one of the hardest, if not the hardest positions of E-Board. Honestly. Why I said that I don't know if things have changed since my term, is because we were founding... And we both know how much that took. But from what I saw Yesenia doing, it looks like it hasn't changed much at all.

I'm not telling you that you can't handle the job... Because I know you can! I'm just telling you that it's not going to be easy. Especially with that huge wooden trunk! :p

The position requires someone who is very organized! A lot more organized than I was!! ;) Basically, you have to know everything that's going on in the chapter, when it's going to happen, and why.

When I was ASB President in high school, I told my VP that it's going to be like working behind the scenes. No one knows who you are, but everyone knows you're there.

Good Luck! Oh, and also, I turned in my application to HR. Thanks!

New Scribe

Well my dilemma regarding the Vice Archon was solved. The sister I think would be best for the job decided to put her name back in the running. As soon as she did that I was able to withdraw mine. Yeah.

I am on eboard though as I did get the one position that I was willing to accept if I was nominated. I was elected as Scribe. I'm going to miss being the Alumnae Chair as I've been able to start getting it going and even got 1 newsletter out and am almost done with the 2 newsletter. Oh well, as Scribe I'm supposed to mail out the Chapter newsletter so I'll offer my help to the Alumnae Chair and we can both work on getting it done.

Vice archons. . .or anyone

Am I the only one having trouble getting committees to report to you instead of the archon?

I keep telling the archon to have them come to me with ideas and such but she ends up doing it herself. Then, she gets the advisor to step in and tell me that I can't do anything about it because 'she's archon and she makes the final decisions.'

MooseGirl 07-24-2003 02:52 PM

hmmmm,talk to the Archon again.
Tell her she has enough on her plate w/o having to deal with committees.
It is in YOUR job description after all.
And I don't go for the "she makes final decisions"...I never got to make decisions when I was Archon, well not that I remember or at least not w/o consulting the chapter.

Do you have a form you give out to committee heads? It just has to be a little thing. If you give them that, and then repeat at each meeting that they are to hand it in to you, the Chairs should get the idea.

Also, do you hold e-council? I know, since our chapter is small, we never do, but you might be able to do this to get them together and show who's responsible for them.
After all - it's YOUR monthly report that has to cover committee activities, not the Archon's(well hers slightly does, not the same way tho).
Make it clear to her that you WANT them to come to you - she is not saving you any work.

Hi, this thread is old but I wanted to keep it going.
I'm currently the VA for Iota Gamma and I would really like to get in contact with other VA's. I want to know about your e-board meetings, how you get e-council together, etc. So if you're the VA for your chapter I would LOVE to chat with you.

PM me or AOLIM me phisigcloud
