Poll For ALL Greeks OVER 30 Years of Age

On your resume, is your Greek affiliation listed?

sigmadiva 07-22-2003 05:58 PM

No, not so far...

No, and actually it has never been. I hate to admit this but so far I have been a 'professional student' since my undergrad days so there has been no need to really write a resume. In science research (I study bacterial genetics) people don't really write a resume, they write a curriculum vitae (cv) and there is 'no room' for extracurricular activites on a cv; and it is actually kinda frowned upon to put extracurriculars on a cv.

In science research, most people are NOT greek, so it might actually hurt more than help to put your GLO on your cv. My experience has been slightly negative when I've told some of the people that I work with now that I am in a sorority. Especially since I am over 30 and STILL wear my letters (I'm 33 and about to complete my Ph.D.:D). Being greek is a stong indication that you have a LIFE outside of the lab. Imagine that!!!

If you are curious here is my life over the past 10 years:

1991 - got BS in biochemistry from Texas A&M
1992 - completed training to become a certified medical technologist
1992 - enrolled in post-bac classes at UH in biochemistry. I wanted to see if I
really wanted to go to grad school. Boy, what I did not know then.
1994 - enrolled in grad school at UH in biochemistry
1996 - got MS from UH and enrolled in Ph.D. program at UT - Houston. Yeah, I
really love school!!
2003 - anticipate receiving my Ph.D.

I did work night shift at a hospital as a med tech from '92 - '96, but the issue of being greek really did not phase people. Except for one lady who did her undergrad at LSU and when I told her I was in a sorority she kinda assumed I was a snob. From all that I have read about LSU NPC rush here on GC, now I can understand why she reacted that way.

Don't have it

The last resume I did was a few months before I became Greek, and I haven't updated it, so I don't have AKA on my resume. I may put it on there when it comes time for that.
;)

Yes it is listed.

I have always been told that you shouldn't put any extracurriculars on your resume that give away your race. However, i will definitely add AKA to my resume.

Actually need to update my resume, but I do have it listed on my current one.

Yes, I have it listed under Community Experience. I work in the nonprofit sector so it helps to show any leadership and other volunteer activities I have done in the community. I think it would be helpful for a job in corporate, too.

Also, I DO list activities and memberships that imply my race, e.x. Black MBA Association, Black Foundation Executives, etc. If they are going to discriminate because of race, they will do it when they see you anyway. And if they are practicing affirmative action and looking for people of color, it may be the thing to get your resume to the top.

I have no need for a resume now that I am a sahm BUT when I was in the workforce I never listed my greek affiliation.

Soror, I didn't realize you were OVER 30.

Virtual Violet 07-22-2003 11:04 PM

Nope

All of the Professional activities listed on my resume show my leadership positions held and accomplishments. Since I have held officer positions in both my collegiate and alumnae chapters, Delta is listed.

Kimmie1913 07-23-2003 11:06 AM

(AKA2d '91- I will be 30 on 8/3 and am answering since I am almost there:D )

Yes, Delta is listed on my resume under community/volunteer activities.

Also, I do not have a problem with listing affiliations that imply my race or gender (i.e. Alliance of Black Women\Attorneys of Maryland, Women's Bar Association). If you are going to discriminate against me for that reason, I don't want to work for you anyway. Also, a significant amount of my activites in school and out of school have been with such organizations. To not include them would almost make it appear as I had very few outside interests or affiliations.
