Rush at PAC 10 Schools
I've been reading about rush down south, but I wanted to find out about rush in PAC 10 schools. I know my school's rush is pretty competitive, but what about the other schools?
|
I go to a WSU, and we have one of the bigger Greek Systems. I know that for guys, summer Rush is extremely competitive. They get most of their fall pledge classes from the summer signs.
For sororities, in the past couple of years, numbers have been down, but I hear this year we are going to have more women going through. I don't think that it's anywhere near as competitive as some of the Southern schools, fo one, we have been doing no frills rush for a couple years now. But the Chapters are still pretty competetive with each other. A couple of years back, you could easily see a spilt between the larger, more popular houses, and the smaller houses that had number 1/3 of others. In the last year or so, the number have stretched, from around 30 to 99 per Chapter. And between 14 houses, that's a big difference. It seems like the competition is pretty fierce around the board now, rather than one or two chapters duking it out for members and the other chapters taking what is left. |
Sigkap, I figured you'd show up soon. She's going to WSU (if you haven't read her other thread).
I know the UW, USC and University of ID are pretty competitive, but I don't know much about the other PAC-10 schools. I think UofA is, but I'm not sure. But, overall it isn't even close to the southern schools and we're a lot more laid back. |
yep sigkap, i go to wsu, and i know a few girls from sigma kappa from working at cougar connectors (one was a contestant in miss pullman, ellen). i just got on coug guys and gals this past year so i've heard a lot about the top houses (kappas, pi phi's and dg's) from the girls. i am excited, though i've heard from a few people that lemon water gets pretty boring :)

I would imagine at the bigger PAC-10 schools (UCLA, USC, UW, so on) that rush is big, especially sorority rush. At Stanford, we probably have the smallest greek system of any PAC-10 school (KKG, KAT, Pi Phi, Tri Delt, and AChiO I think) and that's it. We used to have DG and Alpha Phi but the administration is SO anti-Greek, that once a house leaves campus for any reason, it is pretty much impossible for them to get re-established. As for housing...FORGET IT!!! Stanford has a limit on greek housing (KA, KSig, Sigma Chi, SAE, Theta Delt, Phi Psi, Sigma Nu for the first time this fall, Thetas, and Tri Delts). There is also non housed Sig Ep, Delta Tau Delta, Dekes, and some other smaller Asian-American and predominately Jewish fraternities...Not a big greek school by any means...:(

SmartBlonde, I think you're a little confused. The University of Idaho (which I am assuming the U of ID is) isn't a Pac-10 school. Just for all of you who don't know the Pac-10 consists of U of Washington, Washington State, U of Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Cal Berkely, U of Southern Cal, UCLA, Arizona State, and (save the best for last ;) ) U of Arizona. UA is fairly competetive. We have 12 NPC chapters with house total being at 130. We have about 800 women start out every year and though we are working towards no frills we still have a lot of them!

Yep, that would be my mistake.
I was thinking about two things (the schools in our Gamma Phi province and the schools in the PAC-10) at the same time. Aren't you glad I didn't mention UBC???? lol Growing up a Husky fan, I know darn well what schools are in the PAC-10 (that's directed at myself)........ |

I also went to school at sc for the past year and a half/two years, so you can pm me if you have questions :)

Yet another USC gal among us. USC rush is extremely competitive. UCLA is not so much so, but then, they also have more houses. At USC be prepared for a Southern style rush, just dress more trendy.

From what friends have told me and what I remember about rush, at U of A, it's really competitive, as someone already mentioned.
I graduated from ASU and it is also extremely competitive. I believe roughly 600-800 girls go through rush. Only like 2-3 chapters actually reach quota. We have reached quota for the last 2-3 years I believe. I think Chi-O and Gamma Phi are the other two to reach quota. Brianna Alpha Delta Pi |
ASUADPi, I know you graduated from ASU, however, according to the Panhellenic website for ASU your quota information is a little off.
6 out of 10 sororities reached quota (48) during 2001 formal recruitment (though I thought 48 was quota for 2002, so the year might be off on the website). AXO, APhi, ADPi, XO, DG, PiPhi. Theta pledged 47. Gamma Phi pledged 44, Kappa 38, the rest can be found on the ASU Panhellenic website. Though these numbers could include COB. Quote:

* hijack* == Sigh == Why does "competetivie" almost always seem to
translate into which schools have rush that is more a beauty pagent than selecting women who will support you and the ideals fo the organization ????? I mean... I like to dress nice and everything and I know it's important to put your best face foward... and have been accused of being fairly "high maintainance" but it just saddens me that there are some schools that choose sisters based on whether they were wearing "the CUTEST pair of seven jeans" or not... I mean I know several girls at UCLA, USC, and U of A, who are in sororities and they have told me about some of the stuff that goes on... I believe it was Chloe who even mentioned noticing one of the groups at SC putting aside the less attractive girls at the party in a room with scrapbooks and not having any sisters really interact with them... Maybe it's just the whole "L.A. Vibe in general" I went to school down there for a year and visit often enough to know that the stereotype about people overly caring about looks in la la land is *fairly* true... (I espcially noticed it because I was doing the acting thing) However I would hate to think that people who would make great sisters are being turned away just becasue they weren't "trendy" enough or weighed too much when they passed through the invisible scale at the front door.. (rumor I heard about one of the houses at UCLA, which I know is untrue... but the judging eyes of sisters may as well be a scale sizing up these women sometimes) I mean I know just because someone is beautiful doesn't mean that she can't uphold the standards and ideals of an org at all either but I don't think someone else who can do that as well should be turned down for membership just because she isn't as beautiful... I don't know what can be done about this... or why this is just really sitting badly with me right now... but I will step off my soap box and return you to your regularly scheduled thread. |
