The same way you get sun burn on your skin. My lips have been burnt a few times. I usually wear chapstick with SPF if I am going to be out in the sun for a long time and it generally works.

Well then, in that case, it would be the same as burning your tongue. :)

I've gotten windburn on my lips before...it comes from severe loss of moisture in the lips
