Non-Greek starting a chapter...

I was just in anoher forum and came across a post that I found very surprising. A non-greek was discussing her plans to charter a chapter of a sorority on her school's campus. Is this possible? How would one start a chapter if one is not a member yet? It was the first I ever heard of such a thing. The fact that she was trying to charter a chapter got lost in her real reason for posting which was a friend of hers not being into community service or something of that nature. So...when the one person replied, it was about the friend and her hang up with community service. Can someone please enlighten me on this?

Actually, we have discussed this a few times in the past. A non-greek may charter an undergrad chapter if the college in which you attend does not have a chapter (that does not mean if the chapter has been suspended). You are free to e-mail if you need to for more info.

Thanks Madam Moderator! How would you know for sure if a chapter is suspended or not? I was told on several occasions by the office in charge of Greek Life at my school that they have no record of AKA sorority ever being on campus. But,...I have met a member (of AKA) in my school who assures me that the chapter is active on campus. I was told that the office is always giving out the wrong information. I would think a member would know about her own chapter, so of course I took her word for it! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Either the Greek Life office on your campus needs to update their records, or you need to find out the name of the chapter and verify it on the sorority's official website. If you would like, e-mail me the name of the school you attend and I will check for you.
