What do you think?
I was wondering how everyone felt about this young woman on here trying to identify with Sigma Kappa? I want you all to be honest.
I'll go first. When I first read our fourm I didn't understand why some people were giving her a hard time. So I chimmed in my .02 cents. Then I started to read her other posts and I was completly shocked! She said in one of her post that she wanted to smack someone. (those are fighting words here on GC). Granted some people here on GC were not completly nice to her, but I feel that she was not nice to them either. Maybe if she came on her with an idea of where she wanted to go, there wouldn't have been any problems....And everyone would try to help and lead her into the direction that she needed. By the way I will not be on here for a few days. I will be attending COTS tomorrow, wish me luck, it's my first one. Love, Brittany :) |
I was of course flattered that she admired Sigma Kappa so much, but was at the same time apalled (sp) that she thought she was going to use our stuff. Oh and the other thing that bugged me was she kept refering to us as just Sigma. It totally reminded me of sorority life one.

I think people on gc were just frustrated because stuff was being explained to her and she didnt really get it ... but then again she doesnt know much about greek life so that is probably why she didnt get it.
I understand why sisters were getting so defensive about our letters and such, but i dont think shes gonna/is do(ing) any harm. I think shes un-confused now ... at least mostly. Im still confused as to why she is so adament (?) on the sororities name starting with Sigma Kappa ... but I havent been around much to ask her :shrugs: Peace Love and CHERRIES!! <3 |
No she referred to us as sigma various times here's just one example.

At first I thought that it was great that a young woman wanted to start a local, kudos to her. But when she started talking about how she didn't know whether she would use Sigma Kappa history or Mount Ida history, I started to get very confused and very worried. I can understand that she might admire our creed, as she said she did. But as it went on, it seemed more and more like she wanted her org to *be* Sigma Kappa. I am still very confused, and wonder why she is so adament about using Sigma Kappa as part of the orgs name.
I have heard that people have straightened her out, and I hope that's true. I know that people have come onto our forum and told us not to get so worked up about it, but I truly couldn't help it. I mean, the way I saw it, someone wanted to take the history that we've worked at for over 125 years and just use it. Not only is that a little stange, but I'm a little put off by that. Just my 50 cents about how I felt. And the Sigma thing reminded me both of Sorority Life, and our old nickname.... strange. |
Her last post says shes not going to form SKEPi anymore ...
just wondering if anyone else noticed that |
I'm not sure where she and her organization stand now, but hopefully all has been cleared up.
Noticing how taken she has been by Sigma Kappa, I suggested that she try and colonize a chapter of Sigma Kappa and directed her to the information on new chapter installations on our national website. She replied back explaining that she wasn't sure that her school would welcome a sorority and that her interest was in a woman's social club not a sorority. It all seemed a little uneasy to me, but like someone mentioned earlier, she is/was new to the world of greek societies. Therefore, it didn't bother me all that much. She came to the right place for help, information, and clarification, and I would like to think she received all three. Namaste :) |
i'd have to agree with most of what's been said so far in this thread. the girl gets props for trying to start an organization, ANY organization. that's a difficult task. on the other had i was quite upset about her casual references to using our history and getting our colors wrong several times. i can see what she wants to do and i'm glad she found "inspiration" in sigma kappa, but i feel very uncomforatble with her using "sigma kappa" as the first 2 letters of a 4 letter org. people could get it confused with us. i mean pi beta phi has 3 letters and they're known as pi phi. what's to stop someone one her campus calling the org just sigma kappa, even though our name is copyrighted. aight i gotta get dinner. . .more on this later

Ok, so I have been thinkin....
I think that this women sincerely wants to start an organization, but is taking it by the wrong views. I wrote her a note and she wrote me back with different details. She wants this to be a women's organization yet with greek letters and "try-outs" which sounds to me like a local sorority with rush. She wants a constitution and minimum GPA... but if this were to be a club, why have try-outs? I really think that something is up here, I know she seems nice, but she has not been the most respectful towards sisters opinions, which is a big issue, since she is trying to be more like us. But she is this way to other Greek women. |
Shopgirl, I want to apologize for intruding into your forum.
LAdies, am I the only one that actually read all the girls posts? She says repeatedly that she is not going to use your history or symbols. Yes, she originally said she would like to, which I fully understand, why reinvent the wheel. But then she posts REPEATEDLY that she has talked to people and is no longer going to do so . . . So why are people still hassling her? What is so difficult to understand? |
RE: James
I don't feel bad for my thoughts or beliefs. Just because I haven't posted on the matter doesn't mean I don't have an opinion. There are plenty of people on this board that have started off on the wrong foot, intentionally or not, and I don't see you givin' a hoot about them....Not that I care, but I just think that if you were in the situation, you would be weary of it also. I'm sorry you don't agree with mostly everyone else's point of view, but I guess that's just the way it goes. |
re: james
i did read all the posts, and the point of this thread was to get our opinions about what was going on with the whole thing. i was just saying that when i was reading the posts i was frustrated and upset that she wanted to use our history and got our colors wrong. i know that in the end she was corrected and has more information about forming her own organization, but i posted how i felt at the time. i think all of our sisters on this forum have read all of the posts and we're just voicing our reactions to the whole situation at hand.

did anyone catch that she wanted to start a sorority first? then it changed to a women's group or sorority. I didn't understand why she wanted sorority attachments if there was a chance of becoming a women's group. Could someone clarify this for me, if she wanted to create a women's group and use greek letters, why is that not a good idea (using greek letters)?

I'm going to apologize a head of time, because I'm just a little annoyed with James post. This is our forum (not that other people can't post here), but even people from other org. were getting annoyed with her. I think we handled our selves in a very respectable manner, and we have the right to voice our concerns and feelings towards what happens, it is healthy to discuss these things and this thread wasn't meant to bash her but instead for us to talk about what happened. It's our right to talk about it, so leave us alone.
P.S. I think we all read all of the posts since it had to do with our org. thank you |
