violets

hmmmm....i gotta question. i think i've searched every single adpi chapter's website, i love looking at all of them!!! ok, the question: our official flower is the woodland violet...but we use the african violet because the woodland is unavailable for sale....now, is the woodland violet a rare flower, and that's why it's not for sale, or because it simply is a flower that grows wild? some of the websites say that its not for sale because it's rare and others' say that it's because it simply grows wild. anyone know the answer? stupid question, but i was just curious :D

Our handbook puts it as because it grows wild....other than that I dont know...

I don't mean to crash you fourm. But why don't you check with your NHQ? They might have some better insight on that you don't use your woodland violtet. Just a thought...and your question was not silly, it is a very good question to ask :)

The Woodland Violet is hard to find because of companies such as Trugreen and Chemlawn! They're frowned upon in most suburban lawns.

My lawn, however, is liberally sprinkled with said violets, and do I have to tell y'all that I encourage them? I have one old stone wall that the violets "peek" through, and I just love how it looks. I have been known to make Violet Ice Cubes for special occasions - yes, they're edible! Somewhere (either in an old Southern Living or the ADPi Cookbook) I have a recipe for Violet Jelly! :)

Visit from a Pi Phi!

I'm a former professor of horticulture and I've done quite a bit with violets. Breeders have achieved a lot with woodland violets and you can buy varieties with huge and fragrant flowers. To find woodland violet breeders and societies, just Google "violets"!

sorry for the crash!

I read this acount yesterday--it's from the NY Times, January 1877:

"By the way, a great many ladies have developed a passion for chewing violets. They impart a delicious fragrance to the breath, and at a cent apiece are cheap for this purpose. It is interesting to know that many belles have a fancy for thrusting bunches of fresh violets in mysterious places about their corsets, professing to believe that the crushed flowers exhale a more delicately delicious perfume than any of the myriad scented stuffs that they can buy in bottles."

I loved that C Howard's violet gum! Whenever I see it (usually an old pharmacy counter...) I buy a pack! Sometimes they have the violet mints, but I prefer the gum.
