Chez Greek

Some friends of mine recently introduced me to a card game called Chez Greek. I haven't yet decided what to think of it...

It's based on Chez Geek, which is put out by the same company (Steve Jackson Games). The idea of Chez Geek is that you and your opponents all share an apartment, you have a job which leaves you with a certain amount of income and free time (which varies by job), and you have to accumulate slack (because your job is so stressful) by buying things, watching TV, surfing the net, getting laid ("nookie"), having guests come over, getting a cat, etc.

Chez Greek is the same, except you're in college, sharing a fraternity or sorority house, you have a major instead of a job, and there is a lot more booze to buy and nookie to be had.

The rules start out with, "you've decided to join a frat [sic] or sorority - because renting your friends is better than having none at all."

It's actually somewhat humorous if taken with a grain of salt (or a shaker full). The cards themselves are amusing - for instance, one of the TV shows you can watch is "War of the Week", and two of the cats are named "Bud" and "Wiser". But I'm concerned because it very much perpetuates the stereotypes of greek life being all about booze, drugs, and getting laid.

Whaddya think?

I *love* it. Especially the sacred secret ceremony card. :P

Yes, it perpetuates a lot of stereotypes and emphasizes booze and drugs and nookie-- but so do Chez Geek I and II. I think it's one of those games where you have to be able to laugh at yourself and at the stereotype of being single and trying to just hang out with friends.

I haven't bought Chez Grunt, which is apparently like the others except you're in the military. I don't see them having as much drugs or nookie in there, though.

Take it with a grain of salt and play it with your greek friends. I'll bet you'll know at least one person or instance that fits many of the stereotypes.

There's a Chez Geek III now as well - "Block Party".

These particular friends are not greek, so I got a little ribbing for being in a sorority :p but all in good fun.

The line about renting your friends rubbed me the wrong way, but the cards and the game itself are fun. The computer science major is so me... "Exams are for people without root access." :p

I think it sounds fun :)
