Hey everyone. How much do the NPHC and NPC/NIC orgs interact with other at your school?

Any suggestions for improving inter-council relations?

One of the barriers at GW is that the NPHC (and Latino) groups are really small (avg. like 2 members) while the NIC/NPC groups are much larger, so that is a big difference outside of our traditionally obvious ones.

Well at my school UNCGreensboro, all of the organizations appear to get along great. I have many friends who are members in the HBGLO's as well as HWGLO's. It's just a matter of getting to know people who are different but share the same thing in common......Greekdom!!!!!

No NPHC at my current school, but at my undergraduate institution, there was little interaction if any -- but I think both systems wanted it that way.

At PSU they really tried to make this year's Greek Week incorperative of IFC, NPC, NPHC, and the MGC, but it didn't really work well. Maybe all the organizations in all the councils need to warm up to this idea more, but there was little of the combining that the council executives had hoped for. I think it would be fair to say IFC/NPC and NPHC/MGC are segregated by choice.

At my school, there is a size difference but we all work together.

Many NIC/NPHC fraternities have joint parties, and NPC/NPHC orgs have joint programming (i.e- Pink & Green Week with AKA and Delta Zeta)

We try to include everyone no matter the size of the chapter, especially during Greek Week.

I think it's cool whenever I hear about schools where the NPHC and NPC/NIC groups are mixing, because it doesn't happen here. The school as a whole is very white (I think around 90%) and very self-segregating. I think I remember seeing ONE African-American girl during the whole of NPC rush when I went through. The fraternities are a little better, but not much. The NPHC groups do not participate in most of the "all-Greek" activities like Greek Week, Humorology (Greek Sing), Trick or Treat with the Greeks. They do participate in Homecoming activities, but they do it separately from the NPC/NIC Greeks.

I think the size difference is one thing -- NPC groups tend to have 70-120 members while the NPHC sororities have about 10, I think. And the general campus atmosphere is another.

Ummm I'm not completely sure this is true at UNCG. It's not that we don't get along... but I wouldn't say there is high interaction between the NPC/NIC and the NPHC orgs. For example, all of the NPHC orgs did not participate in Greek Week this year, although I couldn't begin to tell you why. I wish there WAS more interaction though... I enjoyed getting to see and meet AKAs and APhiAs during Greek Week.

I agree with many of the people who have said that size may be a factor.

It's so nice to see UNCG people popping up around here though! Welcome!

@ Savannah State there wasn't any interaction, but then we didn't have NIC or NPC groups. :p

To throw another view out there, why is the size of the chapter used are the reason why there's not interaction? Why not a genuine lack of interest? To those saying the NPHC groups didn't particiate in Greek Week, did you or any of your chapter members participate in any activities the NPHC groups sponsored?

Maybe at schools where the NPHC system is really small, it's hard for the D9 to get Greek Week intramural sports teams together.

The NPC and the NPHC didn't mix much on my campus...as a matter of fact, I didn't know we had any BGLOs until I saw a girl on the campus bus with an AKA shirt on. However, this past year we had the Alpha Phi Alphas over for supper a couple of times, so hopefully things are changing. I was really impressed with those guys--they were super, super nice! :)

Most of the NPHC chapters here are metro chapters, and the only thing they really do on campus is step. Other than that they mostly do their work off campus.

We were really excited to have them back in greek week but they backed out.

I think the different sizes are an issue because it would be unlikely for my sorority to have a sucessful mixer with the Alpha Phi Alphas at our school, for example, if we have 90-100 members and they have 10-15. I think lack of interest is an issue at many schools (on both sides), but lack of tradition is also an important one. Many schools just don't have a tradition of NPHC/NPC & NIC groups intermingling and would be hesitant to suggest it for that reason -- what if the other groups are not interested in hanging out with them, what if they don't get along, etc.? Many groups prefer to stick to hanging out with the groups they're used to, be they NPHC, NIC or NPC.

As for Greek Week and similar activities, it really all depends on the school -- there are some schools where Greek Week is legitimately considered an all-Greek activity and others where it is only NIC & NPC. I honestly couldn't tell you if, at our school, the NPHC groups chose not to participate or if they were just not invited.

Sorry to say, and has a been a long time since I was on campus, there was no overall interation amongst the NHPC/IFC/NPC Greek Orgs.

A friend of Mine in School was a Brother of APA and would sit at the BX table with us while some of his Brothers were upset with him! I thought it was was great that he would come over and sit with us or me. If he invited me over to their table, I was not made to feekl wekcome!

In the Major Colleges, the NHPC Chapters are small or non-existant. Therefore do not want to try to participate in what ever with WGLOS as feel uncomfortable.


My question is, whose fault is it???

ok, i can understand small numbers affecting intramural teams or collaborations for greek week events. maybe it's my "narrow" view of greek life, but those can't be the only opportunities for interaction.
