ol' miss rush
my bestes friend is rushing at Ol' Miss (university of mississippi) and she doesnt really know anything about it. does anyone know if its cut throat, competitive..ya know...anything that could prepare her

Recruitment at Ole Miss is competitive, but the Greek system there is so strong that your friend couldn't go wrong as long as she's happy. I went through too many years ago to offer any up-to-date advice, but let me know if she has any questions and I'll do my best!

Here is a thread that discussed Ole Miss rush AT LENGTH and even has links to an article covering two girls who went through rush I think it was 2 years ago. From my perception it seems to be a VERY VERY competitive rush down there which just completely boggles my mind seeing as how I come from a University where we have to work VERY VERY hard to get girls to come out for rush. Good Luck to your friend and tell her to come to the site and read up I'm POSITIVE she could have a real advantage if she read some of the threads on questions to ask, clothes, and how exactly the mutual selection/ bid matching process numbers game works before she goes through rush ! ole miss rush story

Rush at Ole Miss is extremely competitive, but all of the houses there are very strong organizations. Tell your friend to keep an open mind, and to get as many recs as possible!
In addition to the Ole Miss threads Glitter650 mentioned, you may want to look at threads in the rush forum here about rush at LSU, Alabama and other SEC schools. |
I know a girl in Tri Delt at old miss- There rush is one of the most cut throat in the nation if you ask my opinion. I know a guy friend who is in sigma nu and the frat rush sounds like its organized like sorority rush. He pledged with 77 guys.

It is competitive, but don't let that be your focus. If she worries about it too much, her week will be misrable. Let me tell you something about Mississippi in general, we are definitly one of the poorest states, so the people who do have money here think they are Donald Trump. Most of these people go to Ole Miss.
It's not so much that rush at Ole Miss is competitive, it is just the people that go through it make it that way. So really, the ball is in her playing field on how competitive she wants to make it. The people going through rush with her will set that standard. It's just most girls who go to Ole Miss know exactly what sorority they want to be in, so if they don't get that one they get crushed and then rush just becomes "cut throat." As cliche as it sounds, just tell her to go in with an open mind. THe girls with the narrow mind who only want that one sorority are usually the ones who end up bitter at the end of the week. A lot of the girls I graduated with went to Ole Miss. Most of them went KD, and then one went KAT and another DG. I have grown up with these girls, and they are pretty - but they are pretty normal. They don't wear guchi and drive mercedes - they wear jeans and t-shirts and drive hondas and toyotas. Rush is really what you make it of it - and it is only competitive if you are going for one particular thing. Just let fate lead you through the week and it will work it's magic to put you were you belong at the end of it. Tell her Good Luck!! |

CutiePie that link was a real eye-opener! :D

Hi, I graduated from Ole Miss and I was in a sorority here as well. I am now the chapter advisor for that same sorority. Anyway, yes we do have a tough recruitment, but if you have recs and a smile and a great GPA, I think anyone can beat the system. My best friend was from New Orleans and she just had some good recs for one of the best GLOs here on campus when she went through. Well, she got into her first choice, that usually doesn't happen to people that are out-of-state. Also, legacies are treated well but since we have so many older chapters here they cannot take every legacy that walks through the door. PM me if you want more.

ole miss rush
OK I go to Ole Miss and I am in a sorority. Well I graduate in December so I am not going to be active this last semester. But after going through rush at Ole Miss and then being on the other side for three years, I can say this: Ole Miss rush is not as bad as people may think. I think the reason people think it is so cut throat is because so many girls go into rush with their heart set on one particular sorority then when they get released from that sorority they consider ole miss rush "cut throat." I had so much fun going through rush there. All of the houses are so strong so tell your friend not to beleive the many things that she will hear the first few weeks of school about which sororities are "good" and "bad." They are all good. My chpater has a little over 200 members. When I went through in 1999 quota was 60 and we pledged 62. This last year it was something like 75 and we pledged 82. So it is growing every year. Also another misconception that freshman girls have prior to rush is that they shouldn't go out. They think that if sorority girls see them out they will think that they are wild party girls and will not want them. This is not true. In fact, going out is the best way to meet girls in sororities. Pre-rushing is a HUGE part of rush. So the more people she meets the better off she'll be. Now, this doesn't mean that she needs to be seen leaving the fraternity house hungover at 6am or 5am for that matter because that obviously sends the wrong impression. Make sure she has recommendations for all 9 sororities. This is very important. They will probably tell her that it isn't necessary, but it is. Also I am guess that she is from Texas. I had a friend from Texas who had her heart set on a sorority that is "good" in Texas and her mother influenced her decision. Tell her not to listen to anyone else because she is going to be in a sorority at Ole Miss, not at Texas. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
