Watching Carbs
 
Lately I've started watching my carbs. I've put on wieght over the past couple of years and I hate it! After seeing my dad on his low carb diabetic diet I've decided that it's not just a fad thing and to give it a try. I've been doing really well so far but it's hard to come up with low carb alternatives sometimes! One of the things I found that I ADORE is splenda, a sweetner that's made from sugar but no carbs and no calories. With equal and stuff I get an after taste but this stuff tastes just like sugar with no after taste! Is anyone else out there watching their carbs? Any tips? Favorite low carb meals and snacks?

I'm doing the low carb thing. It's hard as isht. It's easier when you have the Atkins bread (can have toast, sandwiches, French toast, burgers on a "bun"). I love to fry up hamburgers, I also eat lots of Oriental Chix salads, Chix Caeser salads, meat filled omelettes, etc. But, it's hard as hell. I have one "free" meal a day, and one cheat day a week so that I know I have SOMETHING to look forward to...

ooh, my parents are doing that! they have both lost a ton of weight! they checked it out with their doctor and he was really pleased with it. they are past the portion of the diet that keeps you from eating all carbs, so they can have small amounts now. they are also doing something where you have to eat certain foods within or after certain times of one another.

they have gotten me hooked on splenda. i just bought my first box yesterday. i got a bunch of unsweetened kool-aid to use it! i hear it is good for baking too!

i may actually try this diet. my dad and i have the same body type and since he is doing so well....i bet it would be great for me, too!

one of the things they do is eat hamburgers wrapped in lettuce leaves. ihaven't tried that, tho. my mom also swears that if she gets a craving for something that eating a piece of cheese helps.

I've done the Atkins diet, and still sorta-kinda watch my carbs.

Splenda is the best - tastes just like sugar. I take it in my morning coffee - my husband won't touch the stuff because he got used to the aftertaste of Sweet n' Low :confused:

I never could stand the Atkins breads - too much of a soy taste.

Cheese is a good snack, but don't eat too much of it. I've heard pork rinds are good too, but I don't eat pork so I don't know for sure.

One very important thing to do on the Atkins diet (or off it) is to drink your water - at least 8 8-oz glasses a day.

I tried making french toast with the Atkins bread the other night, but it needed *something*. I'm going to try adding some vanilla extract next time...

Is that what the bread is made of? Soy? Hmm, would never had known...

I've been doing the no/low sugar thing and have so far lost 20lbs since April 1.

I too have discovered Splenda, great stuff. But the best part about this diet is that you just replace the "white" carbs you normally eat with "brown" carbs - whole wheat breads, brown rice, sweet potatos...You do have to leave out Watermelon, Corn raisins, and bananas though. I use the Sugarbusters diet as a sort of guideline, but not as strict. Also, they have some pretty good recipes on their website ( I wouldn't recommend the fudge recipes though)

I try not to eat a lot at a time, but I eat the no sugar added kind. Edy's makes really good mint chocolate chip and the new Weight Watcher's no sugar added is pretty good too.

The one thing I have done to cut carbs is to fix my breakfast and snacks. Instead of cereal, crackers, etc I now have a protein shake (I like the soy protein) In the two weeks that I have been doing this I have lost 10 pounds.
