Dormer or no dormer?
please start the debates!
i know on our campus its a huge issue! sororities with no dormer during rush talk about how awfull it is and act like its inhuman to have a dormer, where as sororities wiht dormers defend their dormers to the death because they love them!
(can you tell i love our dormer? :) )
Ill start by saying we have a dormer, just one, and i love it. Its always cool and quiet. Everyone respects the dormer rules. We have rules about the snooze button and usually if we have one or two girls out of 40 who dont obey we usually just wake them up and so then its not much of a problem. Taking a nap is the best in the dormer because you are completly undisturbed.

Is a dormer the same thing as a sleeping porch?

Ive never heard of the term sleeping porch. A dormer is a room usually near the top of the house where all the girls sleep in one room and then in the rest of the house the girls share day rooms, where all their belongings go and there is usually a futon or day bed in the day rooms so if you really wanted to sleep in your room you can. Some sororities have more than one dormer so that it doesnt look too crazy, however i guess it never bothered me cause we only have one. Also some houses sound proof the walls so its extra quiet. in our house we just have rules to keep that part of hte house really quiet. We also usually have it pretty cool and always always dark, the only time we turn on the lights in there is for house tours!

Sounds like a big ole pajama party to me! :) As long as there are alternative rooms available (incase people snore or you need to sleep with more/less light), I think it's very cool.

No what Ya call it, Dormer, Basement, etc. It still is bunk beds!

Got to have the annunitys in Houses as a lot of School Dorms are going to suits! That is what we are planning to do with out ne House !!

Is your school in the south? If it is it explains why I don't know what you're talking about.

Sounds cool to me...I think I'd be able to fall asleep faster in a totally quiet room! And I'd probably get more studying done if I didn't have to worry about keeping up my roommate. None of the houses on my campus have this set up though, we just have lots of single, double, or triple rooms just like dorms.

aren't they kept super cold though? I would have to get a medical excuse or something - I cannot stand being cold in any circumstance - I even passed up a larger room on the bottom floor of our house because it got colder down there in winter. NWIH was I giving up my room w/ its personal thermostat that I could crank. :D

here we call them sleeping porches. The alpha xi's are the only chapter that has one, but they seem to like it. they say that 30 alarm clocks going off at different times doesn't bother them at all. i've only seen it twice (once when i was going through formal and once when we did a member exchange for dinenr one night) but it's cute, although i don't think i could ever handle it.

At Nebraska we call them open air dorms, or OA's, due to the fact that the fire marshall says (or said in the past) that a window always has to be open at all times.

My house has actually renovated our OA's over the past 10 years, the one on the third floor is now our rec room with a pool table, TV, Foosball, and monster stereo. The 2nd floor OA is being renovated this summer to become a 4 person room, thus upping our capacity to 64 guys. This is due to, as Tom said, more desire for everyone to their own more private space.

The idea of a dormer / sleeping porch turns me right off. I need my privacy! :)

There is one group I know of at my school that had set aside their attic as a sleeping area. It was a coed GLO - so the guys had beds at one end, girls at the other. No lights or alarm clocks allowed. You would sign up the night before and state what time you wanted to be awakened. Then, one person slept in a small room in the house proper with an alarm clock set to 5am. This person was then responsible for waking everyone at their designated times. (This was a house duty that rotated among all members; they usually had about 25-30 members, so everyone would do it about once a month.) Each of the other "bedrooms" in the house was a day room shared among 2-3 people.

The terminology seems to be a regional thing. In Indiana/Illinois, they are ususally called "Cold Dorms" and aren't universal, but are common at the larger Greek schools. Sleeping porches seems to be the more common term in the south, which were quite common in private homes in the days before air-conditioning. I agree with Tom though, on many campuses the schools are upgrading their housing from traditional dorm-style to suites with amenities unheard of in the days I was in school such as suites, private baths, walk-in-closest (I saw this in a newly renovated dorm at Purdue). Many chapter houses are going to require millions of $$$ in renovation to be able to remain competitive.

I would LOOOOOVE to sleep in a silent cold room. (seriously, I would keep my bedroom at 60 degrees year round if I could!
