great news for people tired of telemarketers

http://www.donotcall.gov/

the do not call registry opened today! if you register in this website telemarketers are not allowed to call you and it's good for 5 years.

LeslieAGD 06-27-2003 10:56 AM

YAY!!! I'm going to sign up right now!
(it's taking forever to load though!)

Colorado has had a law like that for maybe a year. It really does seem to work.

Just to be doubly sure, I registered our home and business numbers this morning on the Federal site.

We've had that law for a little over a year, too. Sometimes, I miss the fun you could have with the telemarketers - especially those with the different telephone companies.

Typical response:

TM: Hello, my name is Telemarketer and I'd like to talk to you about switching to LMN telephone company.

HC: Telephones? You want to talk about telephones?

TM: Yes, about switching to LMN...

HC: I don't believe in telephones.

TM: You don't... what?

HC: I don't believe in telephones. They're the devil's own spawn.

TM: You don't believe in telephones?

HC: No, sir! They're pure evil!

TM: What are you talking on, then?

HC: A zucchini. But thank you for calling! *click*

That's funny. Mrs. DeltAlum's aunt used to engage the telemarketer in a long discussion about cemetery plots.

honeychile... don't worry, you still have some hope. According to our local news, the do not call list doesn't apply to charities, phone companies, insurance companies, newspapers, or politicians.

An example from our house...

TM: May I speak to the head of household?
HOH: Just a minute please....
Resident 4 year old: Hello? Who is this?
TM: Is your mom or dad there?
Resident 4 year old: Yeah...
Tm: Can I speak to one of them?
4 year old: No... what are you doing? who is this? No, they don't want to talk any more...

This has been known to go on for up to 10 minutes.

Ah, but the PA law only excludes those with whom you have done business! So, if you're late on your credit card, you can still get a call, or if you've donated to a charity in the past, you can still get a call.

I love PA Atty General Mike Fisher for putting that law through!!

so close, yet so far away! local news also said that, for those who already registered for a state list, registration was automatic. Indiana and Kentucky already had the list, and PA is apparently more inclusive... figures that I'm just a state away in any direction.

I received this email today, thought I'd pass it along

Subj: IMPORTANT - BEWARE OF REGULAR MAIL RE VOTE FOR PEPSI or Coke
==================

This is to all of you that signed up for the "do not call" law.

This week I received a card in the mail that looked alright-- It said ”vote for your favorite cola - Pepsi or Coke- and receive a complementary 12 pack" It didn't look suspicious--but for some reason I kept looking at it.

THEN I FOUND IT !! At the bottom of the card there is a VERY small statement. It is SO small it is hard to read--but here is what it says---- ”By completing this form, you agree that sponsors and co-sponsors of this offer may telephone you , even if your number is found on a do not call registry or list "

This REALLY upset me and I just wanted all my friends to be aware of this way to get around the "do not call" law !! Just think how many people will send this in and their do not call registry will be NO GOOD !! The company's name is MARKET SOLUTION. Please send this to all your friends that signed up for " do not call" . I think this is just one of what we will get in the future--so READ EVERYTHING before you SIGN AND SEND !!

My Mom already register. It's a great Idea.

GMUBunny 07-31-2003 04:43 PM

I always do the same thing with telemarketers:

"Hey how about you give me your home phone number and I'll call you back when you're eating dinner!"

They usually either get so stunned they fumble through some sort of response or hang up.

Buttonz 08-01-2003 03:31 AM

Okay I am guilty here....I am a telemarketer (well...thats only part of my job). It's for charity however so it's all good....most people that we call dont seem to mind :)

smiley21 08-01-2003 08:24 AM

Silly silly telemarketers...

I used to love to have fun w/ them too...

I once had this poor lady so convinced that I was too poor to afford a mailbox and I didn't have one, she really sounded like she was going to cry. I felt too bad... had to hang up. Usually now I just say "can you hang on a minute?" And then hang up. It is pretty fun to f**k w/ 'em though.

I seriously think that there is a special place in hell for those people that do that full-time for a living. (No offense to those who do this for charity, although that can STILL be annoying at times.)
