Buying a new suit
This summer Im going to accumulate a considerable amount of money and I want invest in a really good suit. I currently have a navy suit thats ok I use it for school events and what not. My dad said I should go to the Men's Wearhouse but I dont know, I wanted to go to a Brooks Brothers or another high end store. Does anyone have any suggestions????

I'm a huge Brooks Brothers fan (a place that I can't afford just yet, but I think the clothes are great). The suits are pretty pricey, but very very nice.
But I'd try going to someplace like a Macy's or Filene's as well. I got a really nice De La Renta suit for a very very good price at Macy's. The department stores usually have good deals on good suits if you don't quite have the cash for Brooks Brothers. I'm also a big fan of suits by Ralph Lauren - again, I've seen them cheaper at the department stores than at the Polo stores. All are great suits if you have the money (which I wish I did). Good choice though, investing in a good suit is an excellent idea. |
The guys in my classes used to talk about this all the time (we were all fashion majors), and the consensus was that Brooks Brothers is a good way to go. Men's Wearhouse is OK, but my advice would be to invest in as good a quality of suit as you possibly can. It's worth it.

Yeah, Achtung is right, you should try to buy the nicest suit you can.
Talk to some salespeople about places to buy suits, places they might reccomend. There's a place in Kansas City that used to be called t&c mensmart, and basically it had the weirdest hours, but the best suit prices in the area. All the top salesmen from the department stores also held positions at T&C and if you asked that was where they directed you to go. I got a great price on my first suit. You never know, your area may have something similar. Also, make sure you get a tropical wool suit. It's the best material because it breaths better than other wools and thus is useful during the summer, yet warm enough for the winter. Finally, make sure you get a good tailor to make the alterations. |
Brooks Brothers if you possibly can. You'll look great and you'll feel great and you'll get your money's worth because their suits are classic.

i used to work in the men's dept at macys. they didn't have an official suit dept at the one i worked at, BUT they do have some killer sales on suits during the summer. Especially right after summer inventory and clearance stuff goes on sale for super cheap.
i will tell you this now, unless your macys people are paid on commission, know your measurements BEFORE you start shopping. When I worked there, the people they hired didn't have a clue. (that includes me tho...:D) |
If you're sure you've stopped growing (I know some guys don't stop till their late 20's) go for Brooks Brothers. If you think you still have some more growing to do, go to Men's Wearhouse.

Bah Humbug, Why go to Brooks Bro.? Get the same style and quality at another place!!!! Act like a Female and shop till you drop!!!!!! :)
i worked for Macy's in Management and Penneys in Mgt. Hell I had so many damn suits, I had my Own double wide closet and was married! I now buy all of my stuff from Haband mail order! Price is good and look nice for a great price!!!! They are on line Hanband.com, check them out!! Why spend your self into a hole? |
thanks for all your suggestions

Men's Wearhouse is pretty good - that's where my husband shops for his work clothes. However, be prepared to spend... they (at least our local store) have very good salesmen. You'll walk in looking for a pair of pants and walk out with a suit, sport coat, shirts, ties, socks, and shoes as well  I think my husband spends more on clothes than I do!!
Brooks Brothers is very good for women's clothes. I don't know much about their men's line, but they started out as a men's clothier, so it's got to be at least as good as the women's. |
Umm, I've never really considered Brooks Brothers to be a high end store. I don't know where you'll be working, but consider whether how you dress really matters. If it's for school events, random things, a couple interviews, etc. then Men's Wearhouse will do. It probably will last many years if you don't wear it often (I'd probably say 6-7 years).
Brooks Brothers is an average kind of store. For me it's important what kind of fabric i have in a suit and how well it breathes. Also, it's important the cut I get in the suit. If you really have some money to blow look at Brioni and Kiton. For shirts, I'd look at Thomas Pink and Charvet. -Rudey --And remember to finish it off with a jeweled walking-stick. |
Here's a good quick article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/04/11/fa...ASH.html?8hpib You can probably avoid the high prices by taking a trip to the Asias. Custom made suits just like you wanted mom to get ya for a lot less. -Rudey |

Brooks Brothers Outlets can help you to afford the Brooks Brothers look without the price. They sometimes offer coupons on top of that for those who have a credit card or are on their mailing list. Always ASK if there is another discount that you may have missed.
Also, sometimes you can really catch good deals at consignment stores or even Goodwill Stores. The Goodwill in my mom's hometown has TONS of really nice (often with the tags still attached) clothes. I have picked up numerous $100-$200 suits/outfits for $12.99 or less. Also, check-out ebay. Good luck. Silver |
I don't really care what name is on the label. A good tailor will make sure that the suit fits you. There's also a lot of rules that they can take into account for you.
A great tailor will help you find the shoes that match the belt and the socks that match the trousers. You'll probably need a watch, too. You can probably find a master tailor or a really good one. rudey's right, though, the jewel-encrusted pimp cane is essential. |
