I was reading my school's student newspaper and came across this ridiculous Letter to the Editor:

Where are all the Greeks?

Kappa Delta, Chi Omega, Kappa Alpha, Sigma Chi, Kappa Sigma and, who could forget, Delta Delta Delta? Chances are you've seen some of these Greek letters ironed onto T-shirts around campus. But have you seen enough of them? The answer is no.

When I think of all the wonderful things sorority girls do for the community, such as unsuccessfully parking an SUV, and the equally great things frat boys accomplish, such as enlightening us with their hilarious jokes and comments in class, I must wonder just why there are so few Watermelon Bust shirts walking around campus.

Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe the fact that the vast majority of girls in Dr. Jay's Biology 1202 class are talking about their new pastel dresses means that we do have enough Greeks after all. Maybe the people wearing DKNY at the Rec or the fact that Jason Doré used to be in student government means the LSU Greek system doesn't need to be growing anymore.

No, I think I was right the first time. We do need more Greeks at LSU. We need more Greeks at football games for one thing. There are not enough of them there!

We need more frat boys to make fun of people who don't wear Abercrombie and Fitch and more sorority girls in the education and mass communications colleges.

We need more KAs so the Progressive Student Alliance will have someone to keep calling white supremacists. We need more Kappa Sigs to tell us they are really different from all the other fraternities. And, of course, more hot Tri-Deltas so that I can keep telling people that I used to be friends with its president.

Look around today in class and around campus. You'll be surprised at the lack of T-shirts with Greek letters.

I felt dumber after having read such a stupid letter, especially since it has NO point whatsoever. The following is what I intend to send as a response:

I have a question in response to Mr. Douaihi's letter about Greeks. Did it have a point? Perhaps it made more sense in your head than it ended up making in print, but it left me questioning exactly why you felt the need to waste my time and yours.

I'm not Greek, but your letter still bothers me. Time and time again, people will write things that condemn Greeks and then later a response will show up listing all of the good things Greeks do for the community. I'm not going to say what's been said before, but simply ask you this: Have you met every Greek student on campus? Probably not. Have you ever met a bad parker or class clown that wasn't Greek? Probably so. There are going to be people you don't like in every type of group there is, but you can't logically determine that they are representative of their entire organization.

There are students on campus who claim to be so open-minded, but suddenly their minds close when it comes to talking about Greek students. I will be honest and say I've made my fair share of quips about sorority and fraternity members in the past, but once I realized how closed-minded I was being, I shut myself up and took the opportunity to learn more about Greek organizations and meet members. I suggest you do the same and I doubt you will find that most of your accusations are true all around.

Anyone notice how he had to casually throw in that part about having been friends with the president of "hot" Tri-Delta? Wonder why he isn't any longer? Wonder if it has anything to do with his anti-Greek attitude? Hmmm.....

After reading his last finishing statement, I was baffled as to what the article was about.

He is saying that there are too many greeks one second, but then saying how you never see greek letters. Is he trying to say LSU Greeks are ashamed to show them off? I don't understand?

You should also include in your letter to the editor, that instead of wasting his time worrying about the president of the tri-deltas, he should take a few more writing classes. Learning how to get your point across can prove to be very valuable.

Honestly, how could this have been printed??? But then again there was a personal attack on a principal from a school in town printed as an editorial in the town newspaper and was so astonished to see that the editors printed it!

Moxie, if you know who the guy is (which you probably don't because of the size of LSU) but I imagine he'll get his, ya know.

Even though I am not greek, but so hope to be in the near future (prays!) I still get upset when I hear people say "why do you want to be in a sorority, so you can get drunk??" and it's like HELLOOOOO I can do that WITHOUT a sorority! People can just be so idotic

But good reply! Hopefully some more people will write in and show him what's up!

Way to go Moxie! I can't believe I missed that in the paper. I haven't read much lately though.
That guy was beyond rude with naming individual Greek organizations and people!! I have a feeling that people will respond to his letter rather quickly.

Maybe it is just me, but the parking spaces at LSU seem to be way to close to each other.

Well, speaking tounge firmly in-cheek:

This is not specifically towards you, but just by way of example.

We should be very reluctant to try and destroy a person's arguments by ridiculing or personally attacking.

It opens us up to the same. And it can devolve the argument into mere name calling.

However, gentle sarcasm or satire can get you style points.

My hypothetical response may have been . . . and its off the cuff:

Dear Sir,

After reading your letter to the editor I came to the conclusion that you are mostly right! There are a lot of greeks on campus.

And like you, I see them wherever I go.

I go to community service events and charities, and not only do I see Greeks there, they are often sponsoring the events.

I confess that I don't like football much but I go to games to support our team and show school spirirt, and I see Greeks there doing the same.

I see them in all my classes, in the halls, in various cross disciplinary activities, and they seem to represent all majors.

I know I sound trite to you saying that educating the youth of America is important, but nevertheless, I am heartened that so many Greeks may have chosen that career field.

I am truly sorry that your experience with a few people that have rubbed you wrong seems to have colored your perceptions of thousands of people you have never met and will never likely meet.
