Hello all
Hello all,
I just wanted to say hi I'm new to this website so I thought i'd say hello to everyone and ask a curious question that I've wondered about for a while. actually I'll give yall some back ground on myself, I am a very proud and loyal brother of Kappa Kappa Psi from California - I wear the letters with great conviction and honor but, can't help but luagh sometimes when I walk around with letters on and see people stop and stare sometimes at my jersey to do a double or sometimes triple take at what symbols are actually on my chest because at a a quick glace it almost looks like KKK. And for 280lbs mexican to walk proudly with KKK on his shirt is a bit humorous and ironic for me to think about. So here's my question : Are there any other fraternity or sorority designations that are missinturperted sometimes or in english the letters spell something? (I.E. I doubt this exists but its just an example and if it does I'm sorry to those members for humoring the name "Kappa Omicron Kappa" which can be read as "Cock" = rooster -a male chicken ). anyway I hope to hear from people have a good day. |
Just a quick note of welcome to you. I hope you enjoy GC. :) And people ask me all the time what AOTT is...and ask the BF what the sum of N is...he is a Sigma Nu...some people just don't get it.

I've heard the typical, smartass questions asking why I have "rob" on. My ex-boyfriend used to do it on a regular basis.
|
yeh, like my sister said above, i have had someone call my sorority, A-O-T-T! he was like, "I love the A-O-T-T's!" we were like, how can you love us when you dont know our name!! we were crackin up, it was so funny. but it's all good, we didnt get upset or anything!

Misconstrewed
I don't quite get what you all seem to get- more like a questionable look that FGP even exists. Even at local bookstores the clerks will say something similar "Phi Gamma what?" when I ask about paraphenalia. Either that or people will ask if I am in a service fraternity/sorority (which I am, but it's KF).

I thought I was pretty much in the know about greeks when I went to college, until I saw a bunch of well-built, dark, shorter men in FIJI t-shirts. I thought it was a Fiji Island soccer team!
A little off topic (but the first post reminded me of this), I have an unusual pin that I often wear which is my (Scots) clan insignia - not to be confused with a crest or coat of arms. The first time I wore it to church, my pastor said, "Wow, that's an interesting pin! Does it mean anything?" I proudly said, "Yes! It's my clan insignia!" He looked at me strangely and said, "You're in the Klan?!" |
hahah.... someone recently posted on here about a girl wearing letters on the back of her shorts that a non-greek thought read "EAT".... maybe it was Sigma Delta Tau?
|
Not really relevent to this topic....well kinda...
I work at a daycare and the kids always ask what the funny thing is on my shirt... I have to explain that it's another country's alphabet! |
A few years ago, I was living and studying in Arkansas. One day I was going to the local mall, wearing my letters ESF. As I was about to entere the mall and some guy looks at my tshirt and says 'Epsilon Sigma Theta'. I thought that somebody had to pick my jaw up from the concrete. Ironically, he claimed that he was part a colony to bring TKE to that campus. If he claims that and couldn't tell the difference between a F [color=green]and a Q. How amazing!

When I first came to America, I wondered what those Greek letters meant..... period!
I am Dutch and took Greek and Latin in High School so of course I knew the alphabet but I had no clue what it meant. At first I thought y'all were just heavily into your classics LOL. Here, in Holland, most fraternities/sororities (they are usually co-ed) have Latin names so that was no help either... They also operate according to a whole different system, I never joined one so I couldn't tell you much about it. I have seen another Dutch poster on this board (Dutchgirl) maybe she is more knowledgeable. In the meantime, I dated a Zeta Psi, have a good friend who is Tri Sigma and, generally, met a lot of wonderful Greeks over the years. And yes, I admit, I'll always remain a bit jealous of y'all...... |
I have heard people call my house "eck" (EK) all the time. I think that my mother is the most guilty of it, but I let her get away with it. She took a trip down to Arizona (I think) and ame back to tell me, "Hey, we were down there and we saw a house with "eck" on it, but the other way around" She was talking about Kappa Sigma!

Graduation Parties
I just finished my freshman year of college so I am still close to a lot of the seniors that graduated from my high school. Over the last week or so I have been to numerous graduation parties and last saturday I went to 5 in one day - and happened to be wearing letters that day. It was interesting to see how many ppl asked me if I was graduating from my HS this year too even though I had letters on!!!!!

My favorite is.... "what does A R (G) Triangle(D) stand for?"
|
Kappa Alpha Theta's are often called "KAT's" because some dont realize that the greek letter for Theta is not T.
Mary Delta Upsilon Kappa Alpha Theta |
