Serious Question
 

I was going to ask this on the religion question thread, but I thought it would be considered as a hijack.

Has anyone in here ever practiced SATANISM? Or, anything else related?

If you're thinking me, no, lol. Just curious.

I didn't, but I had a friend who did. People may argue with me, but no one can convince me that this stuff isn't real. BAD things happened.

Seriously, satanism freaks me out. Everything dealing with the devil scares me. Rosemary's Baby and the Exorcist were two of the scariest movies that I have ever seen. In real life I couldn't imagine being a satanist.

I had an ex-b.f. in high school that delved into stuff like that. Not a full blown "satan worshipper", as it were, but he did freaky shit. Which is why I dropped him. He tried to get me to "join in". What the hell....? (ha, no pun intended)

First of all, NO, I haven't.

But, I have also heard that Satanism is not actually devil-worshipping. Don't know HOW exactly, but that's what I've heard... does anyone know enough info to shed some light on this? :confused:

The main text of Satanism is The Satanic Bible by Anton LeVey. There are a couple of other books by him that seem to be mentioned in the information. His daughter also writes books on Satanism.

I have read TSB out of curiousity. The main thing I got from it, which I found interesting from a psychology student point of view, is that it's all about following your instincts. Very much "survival of the fittest" but it was never put in those terms.

Ok, here is the story about this guy I knew in high school(I might have told this before). He was a weird kid. Alter boy, quiet, blah blah blah....until he got in junior high or so. He started working out all the time and became more outgoing. This kid was hot. Around high school time, he started signing his school papers "Satan" & "Hitler." He wore a military jacket with a Nazi patch that he swore he dug up from a grave. He hung out with some girls from Columbus who said they were witches, introduced him to acid, and carved a pentacle in him.

One night after a football game, he killed his parents. He sawed off his dad's head while the dad was still alive. He shot his mom and nailed her to the floor. Then, he called his brother home from a football game with plans to kill him (he didn't though).

The cops found him in a graveyard, chanting in Latin. The cops had it on their little tape recorders they wear on their belts. They tried to get priests to translate, but it was spoken so fluently, they had trouble. The gist of it was "Satan has turned his back on me; he promised me power; he lied."

It came out later that he was making his own acid, got off on the smell of animals he killed and put under his bed, and was sexually abused by his alcoholic father his whole life. He had a hit list of other people he was going to kill and how.

This was the most horrible thing that I have ever had to deal with in my life. I wasn't a part of it per say...but just to know that this terrible crime was committed by someone you thought you knew and would talk with is terrifying. I feel sorry for this kid that he got so tangled up in something that it drove him to this point. I feel worse because his brother is left to deal with all of it.

Bottom line.........Satanism is BAD.

Going back to Satanism not being Devil-worshipping...I've heard that as well. But, why do they call it Satanism? I mean, where does that fit in?

Oh my goodness. That reminds me of a story from back home (Huntsville) where some kid who was using lots of drugs and allegedly engaging in pagan ritual type stuff axed his parents and one of his siblings to death. God it was all over the news. Really sad. It is sad how that guy was being sexually molested by his father. People may say it's overreacting, but things like that can really destroy a child's concept of who he is and what the world is like. I guarantee you there isn't a person out there who has been sexually molested/assaulted who doesn't have some sort of serious issues. It's so sad it had to end like that though.

Woah, I think that's kinda unfair to say something like that. I haven't been molested, but I know a few folks who has been, while they may be scarred, not all of them had some sort of "serious issues".

Two women with whom I grew up were practicing Satanists the last time I spoke with them. One has since moved to New Orleans, and I've lost track of the other.

When I was a freshman, one fraternity (which shall remain unnamed) pledged a couple guys who were into Satanism, and after a couple years, the whole house was pretty whacked out. These guys wore "devil's rings" and tatoos and were generally not the type of guy you bring home to meet your parents!

I've seen what the black arts can do, and avoid any situation pertaining to them. Frankly, I thought twice about even posting this! :eek:

My knowledge of Satanism is pretty sketchy, since I've never known anybody who did it, let alone did it myself. But the basic idea I get is that they consider Satan a role model, but don't worship him, per se. Essentially, they believe that what most people consider "sinning" is actually good because it makes them feel good (gluttony, lust, whatever). They don't worship Satan so much as they worship themselves. It's basically set of beliefs based on hedonism. They relate to Satan because they decide to put themselves before God just as Satan did.

It's actually got nothing to do with ritual animal sacrifice or anything like that, and as far as I know it's got little to do with actually worshipping Satan. Sure, it seems like it's pretty out there, but I think most people have a somewhat misguided conception of it.

At any rate, Satanism could benefit from a name change. :p

"Scarred" I guess would have been a better word. I myself was/am a victim of sexual assault and I'm still in counseling 2 years later. I wasn't implying that all people who've been molested or raped will be "crazy." But there is a lasting impact.
