Housemothers - possible C & C article
I had an idea for a possible Cross & Crescent article:
Housemothers Which chapters, if any, still have them? For the more senior among us, if you had a housemother, how about some thoughts / reflections / stories? |
John, really dont know how to answer this!
When I started the local, we were told to have a H Mom. Well I told the Dean, we did not have a room or the money to afford one. At the time ALL Houses had H Moms. In looking back with the way things are today, it could very well be for the best as times are different in many ways than when I was there! We policed ourselves and sometimes now it seems they dont. :( If it was affordable, I would vote yes if possible. Depends on the Chapter size to some extent! |
House mom @ North Dakota
When I was the High Pi at UND (EZ Zeta) in the early eighties, there was an odd room on the north end of the house that was designated the housemother's room. It was occupied bythe president when I was there and I don't recall ever hearing of a house mom at UND.
SMU had a set of house parents in the mid-eighties. Just as formal dinners every night have gone by the wayside, so have housemothers, I suspect. And we are much poorer for it. Does the General Fraternity even have an award for the House Mother of the Year anymore? If the C & C is to serve any other purpose beside being a "Look At This Month's CEO" house rag, then the membership ought to write something from time to time. A historic look at what used to be would fulfill an educational function and as such the thoughtful bros might actually read it. The C & C used to be enjoyable to read. Now it seems that the content is focused on successful brothers, almost as a recruiting function - that and recognizing donors. How about some fun? Years and years ago they ran a story on Wil Geer that was a genuine pleasure to read. We need to have more of that. Possibly a section, maybe only a page, focused on the way it used to be. Housemothers, Long Time House traditions (Like selling daffodils every Spring @ Cal), Floats @ Homecoming Parades (never seen one), etc. That sort of stuff. Our fraternity is clearly a 21st century player, but with roots in the 1920s. We lose out if we forget what we were and what we did. That sense of history is lost now. And this form might be a fertile place to look for ideas. Asbestos suit has now been donned. Flame away. |
John, I am sure many will agree with you!!
Political Times call for a slick magazene that passes inspection for the world to see! See? The pages taken up extolling the virtues of VIP LXA Brothers is nice but a bit to tedious and to damn long! Yes, more on Zetas, and Brothers who are just normal everyday Brothers!!!!! Active or Alum, what events have been done! But, the rub is, just how many people report this to Hdq. ? The C & C is about if I remember what I was told, 3-4 months out for the layaout, proofing, and getting to printer and mailed! Now, as You and I know as most of the Brothers on here is the problem of getting the Zetas, Actives, or Alums to send something to HDQ. so that it can be set up in advanced and sent! Flame, no, I agree, but do you agree with Me!  |
C & C
The C & C has become just another piece of recruiting fluff. Either trying to show prospective members how successful they can be, or a way to recruit and recognize donors.
When I was an undergrad, the High Rho had to send in material monthly, and the Executive Committee checked up on this. Perhaps this is where we fell by the wayside - the chapters are not doing their part to supply material. And the biggest hit of all is that George isn't writing Reflections anymore. I'll write the article if somebody feeds me the facts - I'm a lawyer and my clients sometimes complain that I must be charging them by the word ;) |
John,
You have just mentioned so many factors that most do not really see!:( I too missed Brother Geaorges addition, maybe he decided to let it go by the way side. Damn I hope not as he is such a font of Knowledge of LXA!:) In reading this, I reflected on what I did as soon as I got my copy of C & C: Scan, check out zetas doings, what new colonys or recharterings were going on! What everyday Alums were doing and where from. Then go back and read the whole thing from cover to cover! In todays Political Correctness, it has come to the point the HDQ. is afraid to do anything to tell the Zeta Officers what to do as is "Hazing"! "in my opinion" of course! So what is to be done? If the Zetas do not police them selves, they are dis- chartered. I have tried to instill in My zeta, if you have something to promote in a positive light, send it to Hdq! BUT!! That is a rhetorcial BUT OF COURSE! |
