STOP the POP-UPS on my computer

I'm gonna throw my computer through the wall! I'm SICK SICK SICK of these damn pop-up ads that constantly flood my computer while I'd doing anything on the internet. I have a direct dial-up so I am not using AOL. Every morning I wake up and my screen has like 4 pop-up ads on it. Furthermore when I use some things like my AIM Subprofile it bombards my computer with pop-up ads.

WHAT CAN I DO TO GET RID OF THEM?????? HELP ME BEFORE I KILL MY COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Earthlink's Pop-up blocker is so cool. It rescued my computer from certain death. I know there is comparable software you can buy if you aren't using Earthlink. I don't know anything about them though. Sorry!

I wish I could help you out, Amy, but I don't know diddly about this stuff.

I just wanted to share that I was just now looking at a website and this graphic of a Dunkin Donuts iced coffee came, whoosh, rushing toward me. Scared the bejeepers out of me. I hope this is not something that happens again.

Hootie, I feel your aggravation. I have Cox Broadband (Internet Explorer). When I want to access a website after accessing the home page, I can't do it without Ebay popping up. Also almost every time I access a website pop up materialize their ugly annoying selves. I have a website with Geocities and I can't open up the pages without an ad appearing. I used to have AOL dial up, and that was major pain in the ass with all these pop ups! I never had Earthlink, but I have seen the commercials and the block the nemesis ads, so probably you could switch or search for pop up blockers. I hope this helps spare your computer and maintain your sanity! Good Luck!

I like POW! because it's simple and easy to use.

Try Adaware .. it's a great program that takes off ad-ware and spy-ware from your computer. It's a free download at www.download.com

Cat-
I have Cox as well. I have a cable modem hookup though, not broadband.

I downloaded that panicware one and it seems to be working well for now. The only downside is that it's a 30 day trial and then I'll have to buy it.

I had downloaded that AdWare but I didn't understand how to use it correctly....

Thanks for the advice for now.

As shitty as AOL is alot of times, they now have a built-in pop up blocker. It's soooooo great!

I don't have AOL on all the time, and I have Comcast. Well, every morning and I wake up there isn't 5 popups, or 10... but at least 20!!!! GRRRRRRRRR

Download the browser Mozilla. It works just like Netscape, but you won't get any pop-up ads at all. It rules! :)

Pop-ups: It's gotten to the point where I just ignore them. The pop-unders are the easiest; when I'm done online, I just close my browser, and all the windows (including the pop-unders) go away.

Those ads that appear in the same window as what you're trying to view (I think that's what KillarneyRose is describing - I forget the technical term - some web designer I am :o ) are the most annoying. A couple of weeks ago, when the American Idol finale was on, I tried to get TV Guide listings online, and they had a gigantic ad DIRECTLY OVER THE LISTINGS, so in order to view the listings you had to click through on the ad. However, Netscape can't display that type of ad, so I just switched browsers. :D

Download and run Avant Browser. It is basically IE wrapped with more advanced features, one of them being popup blocking.

I agree with both of those statements. Only minor problem I have is that it treats some things (like the PM button on GC) as popups, and I have to either override the popup protection or manually go to PM. (What a burden!)

I always suggest people use POW! I've never heard of anyone having problems with it.
