Sarpy buys new police cars with ads on them for $1 each

The strait-laced, just-the-facts-ma'am, "Dragnet" Sgt. Joe Friday would probably consider Tuesday's vote of the Sarpy County Board as dumb-da-dumb-dumb.

But even he might have found it impossible to resist buying a brand-new $30,000 police car for a buck.

The board voted unanimously Tuesday to buy as many as five cars from a Charlotte, N.C., company at that whopping discount for the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office.

The only catch is that the cars will be cloaked with local and national advertisements for three years - an idea criticized in Omaha last year as undermining the dignity and impartiality of police.

Not only will criminals will be stopping in the name of the law, critics say, but in the name of a pizza joint, a plumber, or whoevers's logo is stuck on the trunk or hood.

When word got out that the Sarpy board was considering the program, the telephone rang at the desk of Sheriff's Capt. Dan Jackson. the caller, a lwayer, wanted to know how to buy an ad for his practice that specializes in traffic accidents.

"I told him I wiould keep him in the loop as we move ahead on this," Jackson told the board.

The board agreed to contract with Government Acquisitions Inc. only after Jackson and a county lawyer assured them that county officials would have a measure of control over the ads.

Under the contract, the company would find the ads - an arrangement that the company says prevents a conflict of interest between police and advertisers.

The cars would not advertise alcohol, tobacco, firearms or gambling.

Each ad would have to be "appropriate in its message and not reflect poorly on the county," the contract says.

The county would agree to drive each car for three years - and to keep the cars clean. At the end of three years, the company would have the option of buying back each car for a dollar apiece.

Commissioners praised Jackson for coming up with a creative way to save money during tough budget times.

"It looks like a good program to me," said COmmissioner Tim Scrahm, whose only worry was that plastering the cruisers with ads would make them look like demolition derby cars.

Jackson said he hasn't run the idea past the rank and file yet but doubts there will be much dissent over the ads.

"There may be some concern at first, but after a month they'll probably forget it's there," he said.

He joked that one company is bound to buy space.

"I'm sure Krispy Kreme would be a big advertiser," he said.

The firetrucks from the next town over have corporate logos on them. I believe they did the same sort of thing. If I remember correctly, it's been several years, there was a big uproar about the fireturcks being billboards!!

In most places, road construction is a season...in omaha, it's a generation...and it sucks. Don't try going southbound on 72nd street...now thats a pain in the a**.

Hootie/docetboy. trust me K C is same damn way. My road home 1 3/4 mile to home is closed. Now have to drive 5 mi. to work!!

What happens after the 3 years are up and the company wants to buy their cars back? What will police do then?:confused:

Easy!

They go to HS's and hire all the kids to tear up the roads.

Why does it take so long to put them back together?

There are 2 guys per state that know how to do that.

There has been road contstruction on one road here in Murfreesboro for at least 5 years, but I think more. They had to stop in the middle because some guy was embezzling money from the project. Bye bye tax dollars....

It's disturbing, but if there's a budget issue it's understandable. Last year there was a budget crisis in TN, and they closed the state schools. I had to take my finals a week early in a 4 week SUMMER class. I'd rather see ads on the police cars.

Good question. I think that they keep the cars. They bought the cars for $1 and three years of advertising. I'm not sure though. :)

The article says the companies buy the cars back for $1 at the end of the term.

If it works out, I'd guess that $1 isn't too bad to start another 3 years though.

The entire point of this is the cars only cost $1 each...so even if only for 3 years, it's a good investment...that's a 33 cents a year lease...

Whoops I missed that. So it's a 3 year lease for $1. Not too bad.

I'm trying to avoid dodge as much as possible for this reason...thankfully, it's pretty easy since I live in bellevue and work near downtown...I usually avoid the west part of town except for west center street
