To refresh everyone's memory....

John originally posted the following on 01-23-2000 at 01:26 PM on a now-closed thread:

The consensus of member opinions here seems to be that Fred Hatchett should no longer be allowed to post messages due to their offensive nature.

Fred, your greekchat.com account has been deactivated. Please refrain from attempting to gain further access to greekchat.com - any further abuses of our network will result in complaints being sent to your ISP.

All greekchat.com members who receive any type of offensive emails from Fred Hatchett are encouraged to email a complaint to his ISP and email provider as this is likely in violation of their acceptable use policy. Complaints can be emailed to abuse@aol.net , Compuserve (Fred's ISP) is one of their divisions. Be sure to include a copy of the offensive email including the full message header so that AOL staff can take appropriate action.

However, we can see on this page down at the bottom that he gives his email address which is precisely the same email address he has previously used to harass multiple individuals, myself included. Following is an excerpt from one of at least 19 emails he's personally sent me from that account:

By doing this you are misleading many that their religion is the truth. This
is a sin, and very serious at that.

I'm sure the website quoted above will look familiar to several of us. In the message John posted wherein Hatchett was told he was banned, he was instructed: "Please refrain from attempting to gain further access to greekchat.com - any further abuses of our network will result in complaints being sent to your ISP." It is abundantly clear that he has re-registered on Greekchat (as "Iconoclastic" - check out his profile if you're not yet convinced) in violation of these instructions.

John and/or moderator(s): Please ban Fred from posting here and I request that a complaint be filed with his ISP. The email address he is currently using, incidently, is hatchetf@bellsouth.net. Thanks!

I was thinking this morning that one could conceivably organize a protest against 1stbooks.com for promoting Fred's book. 1st books is a fairly new startup with a clever concept for getting new authors to print. From what I can tell, they make their money based solely on a percentage of books sold.

So this got me thinking. I imagined I was a 1stbooks.com executive. This is my thought process...

I'm a new, fairly hip and cutting edge publishing house trying to sell more books to my target audience: Younger tech-savvy internet consumers, including college students, many of whom happen to be... greek.

And I'm also trying to get new authors to come to 1stbooks.com so I can offer more books and make more money. And new authors are typically college educated, and of course a lot of the people who went to college are also... greek.

I've got this Fred Hatchett book that probably sells like 1 copy a month, so that's worth about $6 a year to me in revenue.

Then I've got the prospect of up to 9 million living greeks boycotting not only this book, but my entire website because of Fred's offensive content and his history of individual harrassment.

Then I also hear that Fred's book may or may not have issues with copyright violation and/or trade secrets in published ritual works.

Hmm. What would YOU do?

You would probably drop Fred's book like a sack of dirt, don't you think?

Greeks have an incredible amount of purchase power. Do we have a collective voice? Who has some spare time on their hands?

With my limited knowledge of computers, I had no idea that all you needed to get back on a site was a different e-mail address. I thought the site could recognize where the actual source. Once I entered, I promised not to verbally antagonize anyone, although my mere presence does do that. I have actually avoided comfrontation. I never read my exit letter. All I new is that I could not get back on the site and put 2 & 2 together. I will e-mail John myself as well. I have already admitted that I was a pain in the neck. I have my own forum now and plan to do most of what I desire their. I have done some deleting and banning myself.
 Just think - he's a published author, folks!

I pity the editor that had to work on that book.

Apparently I have been out of the loop- I just got caught up on this whole topic- I had to laugh at this guy's website and it's propaganda.

This is rediculous.
