Hello Sorors
Its been a minute since i've been here and/or posted, just wanted to say hello again and welcome to the new folks....Also I wanted to ask a quick question. I noticed another soror in here spoke of a book by Lawrence Otis Graham entitled "Our Type of People" and I was wondering what that book was about (is it about greek organizations) and whether it was worth purchasing/reading--I have recently finished "Sorority Sisters" by Tajuana Butler and I must say its an AWESOME book--I think that ALL AKA's should take the time out to read that book if you havent already--Its a VERY VERY good book about a group of young women and their journey of becoming AKA's--Have a SKEERIFIC day sorors

"Our Kind of People" is a book about the black middle- and upper-middle and upper-classes, the "black elite" in America. It does talk about greek orgs. in the context of which organizations are seen favorably by these groups. It breaks down the history of several cities' black middle class as well.

I bought the book but have yet to finish it- I've heard this all before. As someone who has been affiliated with more than one group mentioned in the book, but someone who does not consider myself an elitist, I don't know whether to be amused or upset by Mr. Otis' characterizations. And his smugness with being a "member" of these classes is painfully obvious.

Having said ALL of that, I think it's an interesting read, especially if you want to get a sense of the history and traditions of middle- and upper-class black America. Buy it (preferably from a black book store) to support a brother; otherwise, check it out at your local library.

Say it isn't so? I read this book too (Sorority Sisters). Oh, my goodness. It was soooooo good. I am so tickled and glad to see someone else has read it too. I just knew they were pledging Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I just knew it!!!!! I am not a member myself. but I am interested in possible membership with a grad chapter in Maryland.

While reading the book I picked up on a few things. I knew they were pledging AKA. I'm so glad my sisterly intuition was right. I would definitely recommend this book to all ladies interested in joining a sorority or to existing members.

I still haven't read the book yet! I remember there was an advertisement in the back of the Ivy Leaf a while ago, and I think it was about "Sorority Sisters". I read the reviews on Amazon.com and most of them were very positive.

I read the book "Sorority Sisters" and even passed it on to new Sorors.The author Tijuana Butler is an Soror also if nobody knew.Another book to read is "Sister Secrets" by Breggie James". If your looking for books to read feel free to ask me for suggestions.

I've heard a lot about "Sorority Sisters." Where did you buy this book? I tried to order it from Amazon.com, but they were out.

I went to the local B&N and they are trying to order it for me, but it will take up to 4 weeks. Any suggestions?

Hey everyone. I mostly have been a silent observer, but I wanted to post on this topic. The book Sorority Sisters has been out of print for awhile. The publisher is releasing a new edition (hardcover I believe) in May 2000. That's why it's taking so long to ship at online bookstores (It's not out yet). With all the positive talk about the book, I can't wait to order my copy.

Another book that has just been released is "Beyond Our Mother's Footsteps" by Breggie James. This is the sequel to "Sister Secrets".

The hardcover copy of "Sorority Sisters" will be out on May 9, 2000. I haven't been able to find any older copies. I'm glad I found this new site. Happy Reading!!!
