Strange Kazaa Messages...
 

Is it just me, or has anyone else received a strange pop-up "instant message" while running Kazaa from someone called COPYRIGHT_INFRINGEMENT749 or something like that stating that it appears that you're allowing people to download copyrighted material...blah blah blah???

Half of the time I forget I have it running, and when that popped up, I was like, what the heck is this???

Anyone else experience this recently?

nope but i don't share and i haven't been on in weeks

steelpike: How can you prevent people from downloading stuff from your machine? It always seems like whenever I start downloading something, someone starts downloading from me. We don't have a fast modem, so this makes everything go so slow.......

oh i do not cancel people i just have it set up that in my options i do not share.

if you want anything of mine i would let you have it as soon as i am up.

i was running kazaa last night to download some random songs I thought of, and there were porn pictures everywhere :o I was like WTH???!? I haven't used Kazaa in awhile, so it really scared me! Why do they have to do that!!:mad:

And what exactly do they plan on doing about it? I've heard rumors that the music industry is starting to go after file sharers. I'm not so sure they could have actually started doing this and remained under the radar.

OK, since I am in theory no longer employed by ResNet (school comp. services) I will let you know what happened with us. I don't think it was secret, but it's safe now either way.

Say Billy is sharing "Happy Gilmore." A guy in our IT department will get an email from a law firm representing whoever made Happy Gilmore, we'll say RCA, that says a user on our network (UWP) at this IP address has been found to be violating the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, and will ask us to address the situation or they will go after us. This guy emails our ResNet office to let us know, and blocks Billy's Ethernet address from the school's switches/hubs, so Billy can't get online. We disable the port in Billy's room so he can't try and use another Ethernet card instead, and send Billy's RD a letter. Billy gets a letter from his RD, and has to go talk to him/her, then sign some papers. Then Billy turns the papers in to us, then we go check his computer for the movie, then we email the guy in IT, and Billy gets back on.

It is a huge pain in the ass and please be nice to your ResNet and don't share.

A girl in my speech class did a speech on this earlier in the semester and what I took from her speech is that since there are SO many people file transfering it's hard to go after every single person...so what the industry is doing is going after the people doing HUGE amounts of transfering. She reported that it's almost like a random thing however so you can't be safe. I usually try to keep the amount of songs I download to a minimal and frequently delete songs after I've a) grown sick of listening to them or b) burned them onto a CD.

So I suppose if you're only downloading in small, irregular amounts they'll overlook you for someone who's downloading a lot. I could be wrong though.

The impression I've been given is that they really couldn't care about you downloading, it's the sharing that gets them. I think their theory is that with enough threats eventually people will stop sharing, which will stop the downloading. I know we only got complaints about sharing, not downloading, and unless the companies themselves are putting up MP3s and movies, there is no way for them to tell who is downloading, whereas they can obviously see who is sharing.

We have had people busted with HUGE amounts of files...over 1000 shared, and who knows how many more that they didn't catch.
