Membership

Hello Ladies of AKA,

I have been actively seeking membership into to your sorority for several years. The college I attend does not have sororities on campus. Students interested in greek organizations have to apply on other college campuses in the city. AKA will only allow us to go through the Grad chapter. My dreams of becoming a member were very close this semester until the Regional Director informed the chapter to wait until next semester for reasons they were not at liberty to discuss. We turned in transcripts and everthing else! My current problem is that I will graduate in May 2000.I know that I can not write a letter of interest as a grad. Membership is by invitation only. Is it appropriate for me to write the chapter for a schedule of events? Or should I wait for them to contact me? I have the membership chairman's home phone number but I don't think calling would be appropriate. She already told me that just because I am graduating does not mean that I will not become a member. I was also advised by a friend who is an undergraduate member to make myself know at the new chapter in the city but I would have to start all over. At least the other chapter is familiar with my name. I am sorry for the long post. I would appreciate any advice because I don't want to seem pushy. Thanks in advance.

Monique,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Other than the membership chairperson, do you know any of the other members? If you feel comfortable calling to request information about their activities, then do it. At least she knows you are interested and that you not being initiated as an undergrad is beyond your control. Ask if there are any activities you may participate in as a volunteer. For example, one of the grad chapters here in my hometown offers after school tutoring two days a week for two hours at a church. Something like that could allow you to volunteer your time and get to know the members. I hope things will work out for you.

AKAtude,

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate you taking out the time and coming up with a possible solution to my problem. No, I don't know anyone else in that chapter but I will take your advise and ask about volunteer work. I may ask my sister to find out about the events from other members so that I will not seem too anxious. She is an AKA but is not active at this time. Thanks again.

Yes, I agree with my soror. If you feel comfortable enough with the membership chair, call her. You may even be able to tell her what you just told us.
