Question about chapter composition
How aware are you guys about the trends in your chapter compositon?
For example, if you started a high percentage of very overweight people, or anti-social studious people, or . . . something that takes you away from the mainstream would you notice and how would you react? |
We know for a fact that the rest of the greeks think we're tools, that only a small handful of us get any play, that the sorors don't want to associate with us because we're small in addition to everything else, that we have a couple of members who are, both physically and mentally, bad representations for the house (look at me for example), that everyone thinks we don't care about anything or do anything to make ourselves better, and that all we ever do is party.
We don't really care.....At least I USED to until I realized this is the way it's gonna be, and that I might as well enjoy it. |
I think we have all of the above in our chapter... pretty diverse if that's what you want to call diversity..
The majority of our members though are your average all-american type guys... Extremely active on campus. I think our reputation is pretty damned good. |
At Longwood University, there are a lot of sororities that do seem to choose girls based on looks. There are some sororities that are full of blond-haired blue-eyed thin pretty girls. Then there are some (like my chapter) that have a little bit of everything, and do not choose girls based on what they look like. I like my chapter because it's really down-to earth (for real, not like the supposed "down-to-earth" seen on Sorority Life) and we always chose girls based on personality.
I thought it was funny one semester when the all blond sorority I was talking about seemed to have decided to get more diverse. I swear, that semester they gave every girl who wasn't white a bid. But they were still only going for pretty girls. |

So I would say, maybe balance them out. That's why diversity is important here: all-American boys, dorky, jocks, hotties, nerdy, whatever. I'm not saying that I am against overweight or anti-social people, because some of my good friends are also in the same categories, but we live in a real world here. So, appearance DOES matter. My 0.02 cents :) |
I think our chapter is pretty diverse and that is good. I like to think of our chapter as the armour hot dogs house. Fat kids, skinny kids, kids who climb on rocks... but we all have a common love of Armour Hot Dogs and Sigma Nu.
Diversity is fun, I always get different viewpoints and have different things to do. |
I don't think you'll find too many chapters of any GLO with anti-social people in it. I would think an anti-scoail type of person is not likely to join a GLO, especially a social GLO.
I think it's important to have many different types of people, eg, those from different ethnic backgorunds, studious, partyer (is that a word?), overweight, skinny, tall short, etc, etc. Too many of the same kind of person gets boring don't you think? |

I agree, diversity is a good thing. Variety is the spice of life :) |
