Winthrop Univ. deactivated fraternity chapters

I am a sorority girl at Winthrop University. I was wondering what chapters of fraternities or sororities were deactivated at our campus?

The fraternities I know of are Sigma Nu. I know there was another fraternity deactivated but don't remember the name.

Goto your library. Look for Bairds Manual of American College Fraternities, 1991 edition.

If you want information on locals you'll have to get an older edition because the 1991 one does not have the locals.

If your library doesnt have it, find a bigger library.

thanks so much

Also, you may not have to drive all over your city to get this book...some cities offer an InterLibrary Loan (i.e. they go to the library and bring it back for you). You might have to wait a while for this though (perhaps 1-2 weeks).

Also, come equipped with coins to photocopy, as there's a good chance that the "Baird's Manual" is Reference Material Only, which means that you cannot sign it out, you can only use it onsite. :(

I'm almost positive that you can still get some kind of a list of Panhellenics by Campus from the NPC: http://www.npcwomen.org/
I have one from the NPC and it shows each campus panhellenic, including closed chapters (however, it will only show NPC groups, no locals).

A few days later...I need to let you know that I checked my list and it DOES not show the closed chapters, only the open chapters and colonies. My apologies for this mistake!

I'd be interested in seeing that list, but I can't find it on the Panhel website. Can you clue me in on where you found it?
Thanks much :)

I think you can order it for $25.00 from the NPC store on the website.

The fraternities I know of are Sigma Nu. I know there was another fraternity deactivated but don't remember the name.

You might also check with your University Archives. They might be pictured in old yearbooks or there may be other records, like Greek Week results, etc. The Greek Life/Campus Life office may also have information for you.

If you are a SORO Girl there, Why do you not Know???

ztawinthropgirl 04-26-2003 11:27 PM

I don't know because if there were chapters closed other than Sigma Nu they would've closed before I even GOT here. I was just doing a little research! I also wanted more than 3-4 fraternities to be on campus. It gets a little boring when you only like maybe 1 fraternity out of those very few fraternities on campus. When Sigma Nu was on campus, they were very nice guys or at least I thought so. I mean I even think we need at least one more sorority on campus like KD or Tri-Delta. We have 5 sororities and 3 recognized fraternities in the NPC and IFC. Our campus is appr. 6500 students. I personally think our campus could handle 6 sororities and a couple more fraternities.

KillarneyRose,
I was at my Mom's this weekend....the list is called:
"National Panhellenic Conference Chapter and Campus Listing".
Now mine is OLD...it's from 1990.
Oh, and you have to buy it, I'm sorry to say, but I think it's worthwhile...you buy it through the NPC Head Office in Indiana.

scpiano,
I had a look at my list (and remember, my version OLD! From 1990)
That being said, the NPC groups at that time (1990) were:
Alpha Delta Pi
Chi Omega
Delta Zeta
Sigma Sigma Sigma
Zeta Tau Alpha.
Again, because it's an NPC listing, it only lists NPC sororities; no men's groups, no locals, not multiculturals, etc.

Also: I made a mistake earlier! It does NOT show closed chapters, just chapters that are open and colonies (I know this because at my alma mater AOII and KAT closed and they are NOT LISTED). My apologies for my gaffe!

Alpha Delta Pi
Chi Omega

Tom, I think a lot of people don't know who was on their campus a long time ago...we've had Greek life on my campus since 1866...I could not possibly name everyone who came and went, and I've looked into the subject pretty extensively.

Tom Earp 04-28-2003 11:54 PM

Sorry, but I do including the locals that became Nationals.

But that is just me!

We only go back to 1902 at the Kansas State Normal School! Jeez, what a damn name!:(

Now We are PSU with a Gorilla as a Mascot, What, a Gorillia as a Mascot in SE Kansas!

Still have not found that out yet! Ought to be interesting dont you think?
