"Your major is sorority..."
So my mom, who doesnt understand greek life at all, said this to me many times...
Most of us on GC are completely obsessed with their org and with greek life in general. Are you one of the only ones in your chapter? I see GC as more of a support group for those of us who are greek and extrememly proud of it, those of us who will be wearing our badges/lavilers/letters til the day we die... And I HAVE to marry a fraternity man because I would drive a non-greek NUTS... |
My mom is the same way. When I told her I would definetly need another semester to finish school, she asked me if my sport was my sorority ( both my brothers play college football and took an extra year to finish school b/c of it).
Almost everyone in my chapter is like this though. The few that aren't are sometimes considered weird.. not that there is anything wrong with that. |
I'm not the only one in my chapter who's like that.. but I was a counselor at a camp last summer and a lot of the other counselors were greek as well and I would totally try and talk about it with them and most of them DEFINITELY weren't into their sororities or talking greek life as much as I was... :D

i've done a sumemr theater program since high school that i've recently grown too old for and last year there were 3 girls in the program who were also greek. i actually won an award at the end of the year for being so proud of my sorority and my chapter. apparently that was weird, i don't know.
|
I've said that about myself a few times!
I just won two awards at our formal last weekend, the "Absolute Sig Delt Award" and the "Presidential Award", which I'm very proud of and helps support that statement. Also, as I get closer to graduating, all I keep saying is that I wish I could still go to college, but not take any classes and just do sorority stuff. :) Or, if I could get a job where all I do is sorority activities, I would be very, very happy! |
so true!
This thread is soo true! My parents don't really understand my whole greek life, so I don't really go into detail about it with them! The majority of the girls in My chapter, "bleed Pink and Green"! Have a major test that you havn't studied for the next day, or could go to a rush party, mixer, chapter meeting, etc that involves that. I'd definatley be where my girls are!!! It's crazy..you would think it would be the other way around! I find that the majority of the girls are the same way! We will stop by one of the fraternity houses on a Monday night, and see 5 of our girls! However, we still keep a 3.2 GPA overall, I guess that's something to be proud of ! :D

My father tells his friends I major in sorority... I actually find it quite insulting because I am the president of my sorority, a member of the golden key honor society, DOUBLE majoring, and mainting a 3.6 GPA. For all that, I think I deserve a little more credit then "majoring in sorority."

My major wasn't sorority...
When I was an undergraduate, my major was 'college radio station' - so I can relate to being totally obsessed with your organization!
This time around, I think I'm getting an M.A. in GreekChat with a concentration in Alpha Phi, and a sub-specialty in the Syracuse Triad. :D |

And marrying a Greek doesn't guarantee understanding. He helped colonize a chapter of a national GLO at our campus but he's still pretty clueless. |
Even though I'm alum (but very ACTIVE!) my husband says I'm the "Professional Sorority Girl".
I have to remind him I'm just an amateur because I don't get paid. ;) |

I major in sororities as well.

Y'all don't feel bad at all.
As a fraternity man who's graduating in May, i'm going to seriously miss my times with my bros. That being said, the perfect girl for me would be one who loves her sorority as much as i love Sigma Nu. I mean, somewhere down the road, i want to share my life (and hopefully house) with a girl who's as passionate about her GLO as i am about mine. the cutest thing i can picture is the den in my future house, with my fraternity paddles hanging side by side my wives sorority paddles. So, don't fear majoring in Sorority. There are some guys out there like me who find this as attractive as anything else. I mean, i gave everything i had to Sigma Nu, and i want to be with someone who had the same devotion to their sorority...oh, lets say it's AGD ;) Kitso KS 361 Sigma Nu and AGD paddles hanging in my den someday ;) |
I don't see what the big deal is - most people find something that they "major" in in college; I think it's the sign of a well-rounded student if you become involved in something besides academics. For some people it's the radio station, campus TV, a capella, student government, whatever. For many of us, it's Greek Life..no different.
Luckily my parents are very understanding - my mom was in a local sorority in college and was pretty involved, she just wanted me to take it easy after I was done with president to concentrate on school and getting a job, which is what I'm doing anyways. |
Mine's a weird situation.
I became an alumna over a year ago even though I was still an undergrad and was going to be an undergrad for a while. Why? Because I found out that I couldn't handle going to school full time, working two jobs, and maintain good standing in my chapter. My grades slipped just a bit and I really wanted to focus more on academics. Finances weren't helping either. It was the hardest decision I had to make. I took a semester off to get my act together and then what do I do? They needed an alumnae editor to do the alumnae newsletter. I gladly volunteered to do it. Then the collegiate chapter needed a Campus Relations Advisor to serve on Executive Council. A few strings were pulled to make me an advisor since the "rule" states that an advisor needs to be out of school for a certain number of years. I volunteered to do that too. For some reason, I can't seem to get away. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have AGD in my life. My mom doesn't understand it, and neither do my non-Greek friends. Just like Ali, I think Imma gonna hafta marry me a Greek man!!! |
