NEW YORK (AP) - Grammy-winner Luther Vandross is recovering from a stroke, but it wasn't clear whether the R&B singer's motor skills have been impaired, his spokeswoman said.

Vandross, who turns 52 on Sunday, suffered the stroke Wednesday, according to a statement from his business manager, Carmen Romano.

"Family and friends are hopeful for a speedy recovery," the statement said. No further details about his condition were included.

Lois Najarian, a spokeswoman at Vandross' label, J Records, confirmed that the singer was hospitalized in New York, but said she had received no further information.

"We're all very optimistic at this point," Najarian said in a telephone interview.

Vandross, whose deep silky voice has anchored romantic hits such as "Here and Now, "A House is Not a Home" and "Any Love," has sold about 20 million albums in the United States alone.

Najarian said he was in good health and had recently completed work on a new album.

Vandross has long battled weight problems. At one point, he weighed more than 330 pounds, and his weight fluctuated dramatically over the years.

Vandross told The Associated Press in a 2001 interview that his excess weight had led to diabetes and hypertension, but he had been able to keep his weight down for three years through diet and exercise.

However, the singer recently had gained weight again.

Vandross won four Grammy awards in the 1990s. His new album was scheduled for a June release.

Ninjapoodle, Sorhors and Friends of Sigma,

I really thought that the man was actually dead because the local radio station practically played all of his songs in a row. Then about hour in to his get well salute the DJ stated that he had a stroke. Did you know that his birthday is this up and coming Sunday, April 20, 2003 and he's in his early 50s?

I just thought that you would like to know!

And another thing. . .

He is also a diabetic and he keeps going up and down on those crazy rollercoaster diets that's not good at all for his diabetes. He really needs to take better care of himself and stop playing around with his health.

My friend told me about this list night. I was shocked. He's only 1 year younger then my mom. I thought he was much older. I wonder if my mom knows. She loves her some Luther:D

Wishing him a speedy recovery

I need to print this off and stick it in my mom's room! She's a diabeteic and doesn't take care of herself like she should. I 'm constanly on her about her diet. I heard about Luther last night too. I heard he has a new album out that was suppose to be released in june.

love me some luther, too!

i heard about luther vandross having a stroke on BET on thursday night...
now i know a lot of the young folks out there know brother vandross for his older work, but A LOT of people were sleeping on his last album-- he was comin' with it for REAL! i hope he gets better and that all falls into place for him because THAT'S MY BOY! his music has always been SUPER CLASSY... in this time of "girl, let me lick you up and down", it does my heart good to reflect that there is still TASTE in the world..."excuse me, miss, but what's your name? where are you from?" LONG LIVE LUTHER! (and stevie.)

SeriousSigma22 04-20-2003 09:06 PM

I know what you mean sorhor. . .

That's another reason for him to take better care of himself because he is still a very young man and I love 99.9% of the songs that he sings. He truly is blessed with a golden voice and I want to hear for many years to come.

Happy Birthday Luther:)

Awwww!

I think LUTHA's stroke has affected everyone in the black community...LOL cause that was sure a topic of conversation at my family's weekend Easter Dinner. :(

He's been battling diabetes and weight issues related to Diabetes for a minute now.

I wish him all the best and hope that he pulls through this successfully and quickly.

Which brings me too,......what is your favorite LUTHA Vandross song:

"House is not a Home" handsdown is the greatest LUTHA song of all time.

tragedy...

I was truly shocked when I heard about Luther. I worried about him, when everyone was saying that he had AIDS back in the day, but to hear people talk about his diabetes(sp) and hypertension, makes me feel as though the previous rumors maybe be really false. My parents LOVE them some Luther, and I do too.

HANDS DOWN!! the best Luther song is "If Only For One Night":D :)

bluethunder 04-22-2003 10:50 AM

best Luther song:
"SUPERSTAR". I don't care if its a re-make of the Carpenter's song-- brother Vandross put the S-O-U-L in that song and made it off the yippin' chain! (much like Whitney did for the Star Spangled Banner)

TRSimon 04-22-2003 04:02 PM

Sing it for me four times.....

"creep"
"creep"
"creep"
"creep"

I know Stevie did Creepin first, but Luther took it to a whole new level...

A House is not a Home, Superstar and Here and Now would run a close three way, second place tie...

The only person who puts on a better concert than Luther would have to be Patti LaBelle (which is fitting because that is who he learned it from).

:)

SeriousSigma22 04-22-2003 05:20 PM

Sorhor TRSimon,

I agree with everything you said! Patti and Luther really know how to give a concert.

Serioussigma22:cool:

NinjaPoodle 04-22-2003 10:06 PM

I still need to get my butt to his concert.

My fave is A House is not a Home.

Speedy recovery and good health to you LV
