The ever-popular double standard

There's a thread going in "Greek Life" about sorority girls showing their letters (let alone body parts) on MTV, Girls gone Wild, etc., over spring break.

Apparently, if they can identify you, the National Sorority Office will track you down and lash you repeatedly.

On the other hand, if Playboy comes to campus and wants to take pix in your house or front yard (see TKE at UGa), a fraternity will fully cooperate, and widely distribute the pix.

I luv the fraternity system, and hale to the double standard.

Yah guys are like hell yah! But I would never want TKE to do fraternity life though. That is just asking for trouble.

'that was great'

That GC poster's signature - something about "your friends will come and bail you out of jail, but your brothers will be in jail with you saying 'that was great'" - certainly applies to many chapters.

it's not quite the double standard you think it is... when fraternity life was looking for places to go, the word that went out from IHQ is that if you are caught on tv as being a TKE, doing stuff with fraternity/sorority life you get your badge yanked. that came out pretty quick after the Pikes got caught on national television with kegs. Pretty much we try to stay away from that type of thing cuz that brings us back to the animal house type rap that all greeks had and alot still have. that and MTV is dumb. drama sucks. (ever notice that fraternity and sorority life is never with a national or international org? noone wants the risk)

playboy makes a different type, it's not fully encouraged, but it's looked away more... it's the proper gentlemen's magazine.

Heck Long beach TKE were on mtv and they seem not to be in trouble

people will get away with all kinds of things, some stations and shows just draw a more stern stance than others. alot of times chapters will get off free for doing stuff, and sometimes everyone will think they got off, but instead they are just keeping a suspension or some kind of action quiet.

if Tekes are on tv and acting respectable, there probably isn't gonna be any issues. problem is alot of people will go for the TV coverage, and be very stupid to get it.

as one Teke once told me 2 weeks after a campuswide organized protest of his chapter "No PR is bad PR." problem is every chapter in the state caught hell for what one chapter did thinking it was funny. try being a new member and your parents ask you why you joined a racist fraternity. it's not a fun position to be in.

from what i've seen, MTV doesn't care about the positive things, just drama and what people expect to see...

i mean hell when the chapter (i forget which) got the ok from it's board for the old school thing, MTV wanted the house to be lookin trashed, and you get 5 guys that miss college, put em in a fraternity house and say do whatever you want for a week, most people have a pretty good idea on what their gonna do.

personally, i've very anti MTV, the reality shows are just picking people who have issues with each other, then making tapes of them fighting and complaining. then there's their war coverage... MTV VH1 and them shouldn't be doing war coverage, it had to have been one of the most biased war program i've ever seen... they take the facts, then see how they can get the most reaction from them. same thing they will do with TKE if we give them any ammo.
