Alum Initiates

Alumni Initiate Thread.

Is there any links to sites about Alum Int.?

What about links to GC or any other Alum Int. that have become new members of a Greek Org. Say for example what you may have written about your experience.:)

I am sure that what many have seen on the other threads, that there are people still looking. You experience may help them seek more knowledge!

Any ideas or posts or suggestions, or anything?

Sistermadly 04-16-2003 12:48 AM

I think CutiePie's "advice to Alumnae Initiates" thread should be made a "sticky" thread. There is lots of information there that can be beneficial to anyone who is looking into alumni/alumnae initiation.

My thread is called "New Alumnae Initiation Thread" (I think).

Yes.
Excerpted from the thread My Advice to Prospective Alumnae Initiates

Where do I find information on alumnae initiation for NPC groups?
(Note: If you know of information below to be different or you have updated information to share, please PM me so that I can update this list and we can all benefit from this sharing of information. This is information that I have gleaned from websites and other GCers. If you have further questions that have not been answered here, please contact the NPC group that you are interested in directly.)

The 26 members of the National Panhellenic Conference:
"Yes, they will under certain circumstances initiate non-collegiate women" or
"No, they do not do this practice"

Where the National websites contain information explicitly addressing alumnae initiation, I have included the link to those webpages.

Alpha Chi Omega - yes

Alpha Delta Pi - yes
IMPORTANT: Alpha Delta Pi does not accept members on their own recommendation. Either three alumnae members, a collegiate chapter, or an alumnae association may choose to approach a woman they know to see if she is interested in alumnae membership. Individuals may not approach the chapters or associations and request that they be proposed for membership. This puts the chapter or association in the awkward position of having to refuse someone if they do not wish to sponsor them. From Alpha Delta Pi's founding, their membership policy has been supportive of this philosophy

Kappa Alpha Theta - yes

Kappa Delta - (sort of....under specific circumstances)
Kappa Delta does not have a specific alumnae initiate program although they do, under specific circumstances alumnae initate women. Normally these women are working with one of KD's college chapters as perhaps a faculty advisor or have had contact with an alumnae association who then nominates them for alumnae initiation.)

Kappa Kappa Gamma – Many thanks to KappaKittyCat for this information....
Currently, only alumnae members of a local sorority that has become a chapter of Kappa may be initiated into alumnae membership in the Fraternity.

At Kappa Kappa Gamma's 2002 Convention, a bylaw change was proposed that would allow selective alumnae initiation. The details of this bylaw change can be found in the link which appear immediately following. The proposal was defeated. Instead, a resolution was passed that established a 2-year pilot program allowing four of the chapters with the most need for chapter advisors to initiate women (usually professors or local businesswomen) who were already serving in a mentoring capacity. This would allow them to become full chapter advisors. The results of the pilot program will be presented and the proposed bylaw change reconsidered at the 2004 Convention.

Contact any of the women on the Task Force (contact information provided on the link) for more information about the status of Kappa's alumnae initiation program.

They do initiate alumnae of an absorbed local and also women who have demostrated service to the sorority like a mom or advisor.

Zeta Tau Alpha - yes
"A ZTA alumnae may recommend outstanding women from their communities for membership in ZTA. A four year period must have elapsed between the time she left college and the time she would be initiated. The unanimous vote of National Council is required. It is desirable the woman has attended an institute of higher learning, although not required to be a graduate. She should bring to the membership the attributes hoped for in each new member. Approval of the recommendation is not automatic. If you are interested in becoming an alumnae initiate, it is important to show sincere interest in our organization. Alumnae who do recommend women to become alumna initiates usually do so because the unaffiliated woman becomes involved with a collegiate or alumnae chapter, supports our programs, reflects our values and demonstrated a commitment to lifelong membership. There is a definite relationship formed with the members of ZTA prior to becoming recommended for membership. Women do not generally "seek out" becoming an alumna initiate. It usually happens because the collegiate or alumnae members feel the woman would be an asset to our organization. If you are interested in sorority membership and have no special group attachment, perhaps there are other groups whose programs operates differently than ZTAs. But, if you do have an ongoing relationship with ZTA, you can inform the members that you are interested in becoming an alumna initiate. Again, there are no guarantees they will start the process or that National Council will approve the recommendation. ZTA typically approves under ten women a year for this honor."

I hope that this helps. If you review the various website links given above, each NPC sorority has subtle yet different ways of approaching the Alumnae Initiation process.

Thank you for your kind words, Sistermadly. I think that's a great suggestion. I would also like to see the "Roll Call" up there as well, as a "sticky" thread (i.e. one that does not get lost as others get "bumped up" above it).

articles from newspapers and magazines

It would be nice to have a single thread with the web addresses and/or content of all of the magazine and newspaper articles about AI. I think such a thread would highlight the positive impact of AI and the various sororities' support of AI.

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but......

My journey in AI has taken some interesting twists and turns.

I'm meeting a group tomorrow night at their final meeting of the season.

I'm not ready to spill beans yet but stay tuned--that day is hopefully coming.

Update

I only have a few moments to post so I'll just give the bare details for the time being.

I met a spectacular group of women last night ranging in age from 25 to 90!. They made me feel very welcome and I didn't feel the slightest bit out-of-place for being interested in AI.

Let me put it this way: if they offered me a bid, I'd take it. If they do NOT offer me a bid, I'd still think they were the best group of people I've met in a long time and have a world of respect for them.

That's how well this first intro went.

Here's to progress!
Have a great holiday weekend, folks!

Here's Alpha Sigma Phi's rules on membership, from their constitution and bylaws:

Quote:

ARTICLE II. MEMBERSHIP

Section 1. Membership: Membership shall be acquired only by male persons,

A. Who are not members of (1) any viable, general Greek-letter fraternity of college grade and national in scope, or (2) any other group antagonistic to fraternities;

B. Who are likely to be intellectually, morally and socially of benefit to the Fraternity;

C. Who shall have been duly elected by secret vote of a Chapter in good standing or approved by the Grand Council;

D. Who have been duly initiated in accordance with the Rituals of the Fraternity or acquired by merger of another fraternity, and

E. Who fully understand that the mission of Alpha Sigma Phi is to create and perpetuate brotherhood.

Section 2. Classes of Membership: There shall be three classes of members: Undergraduate, Faculty, and Alumni.

A. Undergraduate members are all members regularly enrolled in attendance at an institution of learning at which they were initiated or at which the member and chapter have agreed to affiliate the member, and at which the Chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi is in good standing. Except as directed by the Grand Council, undergraduate students qualifying for membership under this section are not eligible to be Alumni members.

B. Faculty members are members on the faculty or staff of the institution of learning at which a Chapter exists. Faculty members may be formally initiated upon election by a Chapter in good standing or at the invitation of the Grand Council. The Grand Council has authority to waive fees for initiation of faculty members. Faculty members have the same rights, privileges and obligations as alumni members.

C. Alumni member are all members who do not qualify as undergraduate or faculty members.

D. There shall be no local, social, honorary, or associate memberships, nor any membership status other than as listed in Sections 2A, 2B, and 2C, above, all of whom are duly authorized and recorded by the Fraternity Headquarters.

Section 3. Members-at-Large:

A. After investigation and approval by the Grand Council a member of a colony or a former colony or interest group of Alpha Sigma Phi, or of a local fraternity which had petitioned Alpha Sigma Phi for colony status, or a former pledge of a chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi who left the college and chapter in good standing, may be initiated by direction of the Grand Council as a member-at large of Alpha Sigma Phi.

B. Alumni of Phi Pi Phi Fraternity and Alpha Gamma Upsilon Fraternity whose chapters were not chartered in Alpha Sigma Phi and who are initiated by Alpha Sigma Phi are members-at-large of Alpha Sigma Phi.

C. Members-at-large are alumni members of Alpha Sigma Phi unless enrolled in undergraduate work at an institution of learning where Alpha Sigma Phi has an active or inactive chapter may be enrolled on the roster of the chapter with consent of the chapter, if active, the alumni board of an inactive chapter, if active, or by direction of the Grand Council if there is no active chapter or active alumni group.
Our one famous M-A-L was Jonathan Burns, the son of the late Grand Secretary Emeritus Ralph Burns. Brother Jon was a grad of WooP (The United States Military Academy at West Point, which does not have fraternities or sororities except their own 4th Class system) and was initiated an M-A-L in 1980, He is now a member of the Grand Council. Recently, we initiated a member who was a former pledge of one chapter and waited something like 25 years to finally pursue initiation.
