Roys Decision

Official, Roy Williams has left the U of Kansas and gone to UNC!

While Roy was a Grad, player, Assit. Coach there, I think He made a mistake!:(

He will be in the shadow of Dean Smith! His Wife is from the Kansas area. He was an idol in Kansas, he let his team members down and the new players who signed letters to KU.

The AD was fired this week, reasons still up in the air!

He is going from the Big XII who has been STRONG in FoosBall and BB!

Well, I wish Roy well! May he try to bring the SEC to BB respectability!

I am sure he will find it tuff inspite of signing a BIG Contract! He dont win at NC, he is gone!

Gorilla Fan, but a Kansan!

UNC is ACC.

It's a sad day....

Yes, but if KU gets Bill Self (who coached at Univ. of Tulsa!!!), they will be in good shape.

KU's probably in good shape no matter what. It's a dream job and a great program. I can understand why Roy Williams headed to UNC. Under normal circumstances I'd say that KU is a more prestigous program.

I kind of figure that Roy Williams would bolt Kansas for UNC. As much Success Roy has brought to the Jayhawks' basketball program, His Heart Bleeds North Carolina Blue and White. I got a feeling He'll succeed at Carolina.

So if Bill Self goes to KU, who is Illinois going to get? I haven't heard anything about that, yet.

I've heard about Tom Crean at Marquette being on Illinois' short list if Self goes to Kansas.

I'm sure that Bill Shelf will do a creditable job as KU's coach.

ZTABullwinkle 04-15-2003 05:58 PM

With Roy joining UNC, do you guys realize how incredible the coaching staff of the ACC has now gotten??? WOW! Next season is going to be interesting. That is all I have to say.

Well, one more thing...

GO DUKE BLUE DEVILS!!! :D

Tom Earp 04-15-2003 07:08 PM

OK, K, ACC, as far as I am concerned what is outside of Big XII?

Yes to be honost, I do not blame him for leaving KU.

So far, some of the current players say they wont be back and what I got today that 3 of the MikeyD All-Americans have alread said no to KU!

KU has a long and storied BB Past and been one of the top teams for many years with many Named players that have gone on to the Pros.

He will be missed for sure, and I congratulate the UNC for having come to your program and school. He is a class act!

Of course, the main reason I liked him is he is short!

May Roy do well at UNC, and May KU beat him everytime!:D

Obviously, I have quite a lot to say on this topic. :)

I used to have a huge amount of respect for Roy Williams. No longer.

Three years ago, Roy said the only way he'd leave is if they fired him or if he retired. Well, we didn't fire him and I don't see him out on the first tee, so what does that mean? It means he betrayed the fans, the players, and the alumni.

I don't hate Roy and I understand why he left. His dad and his sister are both in poor health. If my dad and my sis were in that condition, I'd pack my bags, get someone to sublease my place and be on the highway as soon as I could.

HOWEVER, the whole affair reeks of deceit, and most people (myself included) have a hard time getting past that. Roy said he wouldn't leave, and he did. He said he wouldn't drag it out, and he did. He said NC hadn't offered him the job, and they had.

For a lot of Kansas fans, Roy is like an ex. We're trying to tell ourselves that we cared for Roy deeply and he did for us, but it just wasn't going to work out. But it still stings. Roy will be persona non grata in Lawrence for a very long time, and I'm glad I'll be out of town on Thursday, when he comes back for the awards banquet.

The one bright spot in this is that our current players - particularly Simien and Langford - are showing a lot of leadership. They've all decided to stay, and some of them even called the incoming recruits.

If Bill Self comes to KU, you'll get your National Championship within 5 years. I'm glad KU fans aren't too upset over losing Roy, because they are good fans.

If Mark Few comes to KU, you'll get your National Championship within 5-10 years.

Everyone else doesn't matter.

Whoever it is has their work cut out for them in the Big XII. At least in the last 2-3 years it's just been a dominant conference and tough from top to bottom (NU and maybe K-State excluded).

Heh, I'm actually one of the calmer ones. :) There have been people referring to him as "Benedict Williams" and people vowing to tar and feather him when he returns for the award banquet this Thursday. People will calm down eventually, but right now there are a lot of angry people here.

Bill Self is a great coach and I think he could win championship for us.

I wish Roy had done that for us. He could have done that with next year's team, but he chose to leave instead. I'm not sure whose loss is bigger.
