Fire!
I felt compelled to share a story with you guys.
Ok, so it's 9 AM and I'm doing what any respectable college student is doing at 9 AM on a Friday...sleeping. All of a sudden I think I hear someone's really annoying alarm clock, very persistaint. One of girls comes running down the hall, knocking on everyone's door, it's the fire alarms. So I drag myself downstairs and out the door. Luckly, not manypeople were home. Our housemom is on the phone with the fire department with her hair in a strange pony tail on the top of her head-she was in the middle of dying it. Our president is on the phone with someone from the university trying to find the number of someone else. One of the girls proceeds to walk around yelling "good morning neighborhood"-she figured what the hell, if our alarm didn't wake them up the fire trucks will. Plus she had her camera to get pictures of our house and fire turcks and policemen..... I guess she figured she'd commemorarate the occasion as it's an Alpha tradtion that we have the fire trucks here at least twice a sememster...who needs fire drills? we create our own. And of course we had a girl who had the embarassing situation of letting her boyfriend stay over the night before (we're not allowed to have boys after 3 AM)....although our housemom decided that the look of embarassment she gave was payment enough.... This whole fiasco was funny....although I'm sure it would have been funnier had I gotten to sleep before 3 AM!!!! |

Can you imagine the phone call? "Hi mom, you're not going to believe this..." |
Good grief! I'm glad you guys are all OK.

Oh gosh, during the fall semester my freshman year, I was living in the dorms. It was October and was beginning to get chilly, so everybody was turning on their heaters. Apparently the heaters hadn't been turned on since the previous winter, so there was lot of stuff built up, such as dust, which began to smoke. Needless to say, for about a week, we were woken up about 5 times a night to the sound of the damn fire alarms. We all had to evacuate, of course, and it was rather nippy out. It was such a pain in the butt! I remember using that as an excuse not to go to class though. :p

When I was a first semester Freshman and living in a dorm, and one of the adjacent girls' dorms (they weren't co-ed in those days) had a fire drill, we would empty out faster than the girls. Guess we just wanted to see what the girls slept in and how they looked without makeup and hairspray.

I have another!
Spring semester of my sophomore year one of my chapter sisters and some of our friends from the dorm bought a birthday cake for the gal who lived next door to me (another of our friends). Of course we aren't supposed to have candles in the dorms, but this was a special occassion, ya know? So anyway, they put 19 trick candles on this cake and go over to sing to her. I don't remember why, but I didn't go over to sing with them. Anyway, next thing I know, the fire alarm is going off. I walk out of my dorm and they are all walking out as well and I can tell by the look in their that something was wrong.
Eventually everyone is out of the dorms and the fire truck comes as does campus police. We're out there for about 15 minutes when they come out asking, "Who in room 117 stuck a birthday cake in the shower? Nice try, but it didn't work." The girls had taken out the candles and put them at the bottom of the garbage can, smeared the frosting to cover the holes, and stuck the cake in the shower. Oh my gosh, it was soo funny!! They got to keep the cake though. They offered me a slice and, I don't know, after being in the shower and in so many different hands, it just didn't sound appetizing. |
We had three fire alarms go off in two hours yesterday at the dorm.
The third time, my roommate was in the shower when it went off and she had to come outside in her shower flip-flops, bathrobe and towel. Fortunately it was nice out yesterday . . . we've had some winter fire drills where we haven't been so lucky. |
Somebody committed arson in my dorm once...
This individual left newspapers on top of the ranges in several suites, including the one next door to mine and the one above mine, and turned the burners on. S/he obviously knew the night watchmen's patrol times - they used to come through at 1am and the fires were started around 1:15. The papers caught fire, the alarms went off, we all evacuated (brrr!), and the firefighters went in and put out the fires. Thankfully, the fires didn't spread. There were similar attacks in at least two other dorms on campus, attributed to the same person - who was never caught  |

Apparently my Grandparents used to own 2 bars on the square when my dad was a kid. I once spent a summer there. It was a big shell shock for a city girl from Chicago. Now I live in Arizona, and I still can't imagine living somewhere like Macomb. Hahaha. Macomb. What a great little town. |
