Fraternity Education Exam

Hi ladies. I just wanted to let you know that I received an email today from Linda Beavin and Melissa Jones stating that there will not be a fraternity education exam again this year. They want each chapter to engage in some type of activity (Phi Sig Jeopardy or whatever) that will test your knowledge of Phi Sig material. Here is a copy of what Melissa Jones wrote:

Ok, since I have still heard nothing in regards to the fraternity education exam here is the deal. Please have your chapters do the same thing they did last year. I have attached the verification form from the Collegiate Calendar and this lists out a few examples of exercises they can do. No need to create anything elaborate as long as the chapter works on this exercise together. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Instructions for completing the FRATERNITY EDUCATION EVENT VERIFICATION FORM

Plan to spend up to 1 hour on a fraternity education event. This should be easy to fit into your chapter schedule, and less time consuming than taking and scoring a fraternity education exam.

You could use one of the ideas list below, or a combination of these ideas and other chapter fraternity education traditions. Remember that small prizes always help motivate sisters to do their very best – rewards need not be expensive, just fun!

Paper Bag Skits:
Collect a box full of everyday items, for example: a cup, a spatula, a stapler, crayons, a sponge, etc. Divide the items up into paper bags, with 6 – 8 items in each bag. Then, create index cards with different fraternity education topics on them.

Divide the chapter into teams of 4 people. Give each team a paper bag and an index card. Each team has 15 minutes to create a skit explaining the topic on their index card, using all of the materials in their paper bag.

At the end of 15 minutes, go around the room and let each team perform their skit. The vice archon & chapter advisor can judge the skits, and award a small prize to the winning group!

Brainstorming:

Break the chapter into 2 teams. Each team gets a sheet of paper from a flip chart. Each team should designate a writer, to document their list.

The vice archon names a topic – such as name the offices of Supreme and Grand Council. Teams then have 60 seconds to call out the offices. The “writer” documents their list. At the end of 60 seconds, the vice archon reviews the answers with the group. The team with the most correct answers wins a point. Repeat with clean paper, for the members of the National Panhellenic Conference, past grand archons, etc.

Games:

Use fraternity education topics to create a game modeled after Jeopardy, Family Feud, the $100,000 Pyramid, the Weakest Link, or Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Divide the chapter into teams, and ham it up as the host!

I hope everyone is having a good week so far. If anyone has any questions about the Fraternity Education Exam, feel free to contact me and ask. That's what advisor's are for! :D

MHO:

If we keep doing this, and emphasizing our core values and not our history, people will forget our history all together and where is that going to get us?

Eh, people always wanted me on their jepordy team!

I realize I've been out of the chapter loop for a few years, but to me that's terrible. As a sister we should know our history--don't we learn it during our new member peroid? I remember wanting to know all I could about the history of Phi Sig, and I still remember *most* of it now!

What exactly is the reason for not having the F.E. exam?

From what I understand, National is in the process of revising the Fraternity Education Exam. This has been for almost a year now. I sure hope this test is awesome looking since it is taking so long! Anyway, I agree that new members should want to know all they can about the sorority, but unfortunately due to all the hazing rules and regulations, most new members don't really know anything! Don't get me wrong and don't get upset at what I just said, but I think that things have really changed since I was initiated (Spring 1999). Oh well, times change and so do rules!

I was a little annoyed at this as well. We voted on this in JULY at Convention (I was there) and we, as undergraduates, stated we wanted to continue taking the test instead of these group projects. I agree, the test better take my breath away, seeing as though they've been putting it together for a year now!

i was one of the few who voted to have the test
and i am now upset that we don't get to have it
