IRD
Hey ladies...
I noticed that IRD came up in the Symbol board, so I thought I'd ask how everyone's IRDs are structured. In Michigan, the chapters from EMU (ZA), U of M (AB), Wayne State (APi), Central (AU), State (Chi), Alma (ZN), Northwood (ZS), Western (ZPsi - now closed http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif ), and all the local alumnus chapters get together in Madison Heights, MI (at least that's where it's been the past two years). We have a big luncheon - with red, buff, and green food, of course! - and they have a speaker, they present scholarships, and this past year we had a group activity which was really fun! Our chapter, Gamma Omega (University of Alabama at Birmingham) has done it differently over the past 3 years. We started off just having a luncheon for our chapter and alumnae. For the past two years, however, we have had our luncheon with Montevallo's chapter. Both chapters seem to enjoy having it together more than individually. We take turns hosting each other, we alternate each year. I think this year we are going to try to involve more nearby chapters. It's easy for Montevallo & UAB to get together because we are within 30 minutes of each other. The other chapters in AL are at least an hour away from both of us.

What I love about our IRD is that we almost always have it at a Country Club. We're fortunate to have some alumnae who are members...the food and the views are simply amazing!
Our Hawaii Alumnae Chapter was founded in 1936 and Delta Sigma chapter was established in 1992, so the majority of our alumnae are from other chapters. Chapter roll is always one of my most favorite times because so many chapters are represented in Hawaii. We also have a time set aside to recognize some of our sisters that have recently moved away or are spending their first IRD away from us. Some write letters for the occasion, and these messages are read. It's a great way to remember them and at the same time be happy that they too are celebrating IRD wherever they're at. My first ever IRD was indeed a special one. I had the pleasure of meeting Dorothy Wright, a sister from the Theta chapter at Goucher College (inactive) who was celebrating her 75th Anniversary. Here I was, initiated for about 2 hours...and here was Dottie--an AGD since 1925. I hope that we can all live that long to celebrate such a wonderful Jubilee. |
Off the subject of IRD for a second, how is it that the Hawaii chapter, founded in 1992, is Delta Sigma, and EMU's chapter, founded in 1974 is Zeta Alpha? That's not Greek Alphabetical order!

I think IHQ names chapters according to what Area or Province the colony is in.
The chapters that begin with "Delta" are located in Hawaii, Washington, California, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Alberta, British Columbia. The only exceptions are Iota and Phi chapter at UW and UO, respectively. The "Zeta" chapters are more toward the north and/or east, with Michigan, Maryland, Mass, RPI in NY, parts of PA, and Ontario included. |
I an alum of Alpha Mu, and we are in PA. I thought that your chapter name went in order for the years you were chartered.

I *THINK* that that's how things were for a while, but (I'm not too sure about this) I think IHQ changed their policy about naming chapters (I can't remember when). I remember hearing about that somewhere. I'm going to assume that this was the way for the earlier chapters until IHQ changed their naming policy according to regions.
If we went by charter date and greek alphabet order, then Leslie's chapter comes before mine, but we all know that Zeta comes after Delta. Anyone who knows for sure about this please let us know because I'm so curious! |
This change that OTW is referring to came very early on. In fact, as of my 1931 Quarterly, we already had 4 provinces, one for each geographical region. I don't know the details off the top of my head, but since there is a question about it, I will look it up in my Quarterly and post it under my Daily Fact thread later today. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

All I know is that GTau was chartered in 1971. Gamma Phi wanted GTau since it is Ga. Tech, but IHQ wouldn't let them have it even though they were chartered shortly after us..forget year.
Interesting that Gamma Alpha is at UGA!! Of course, it's been around for decades! |
