Student got suspended because he wore a pepsi t-shirt

Student Suspended For Wearing a Pepsi T-Shirt!

by Todd Wiese toddw@theroc.org

Yep! Another student has gotten himself in trouble at school for wearing a t-shirt the officials didn't like. And just what offensive death-metal band graced the kid's chest? Cradle O' Filth? Marilyn Manson? NO! Pepsi Cola! Mike Cameron,19, a Senior at Greenbrier High School in Evans, GA, was suspended for one day for wearing the Pepsi t-shirt on official Coke Day! "In my eyes, I didn't do anything wrong," said Mike.

"We had the regional president (of Coca-Cola) here and people flew in from Atlanta to do us the honor of being resource speakers." complained Gloria Hamilton, the principal of Greenbrier High, in defense of Coke Education Day. "It's not a Coke-Pepsi war issue. It has nothing to do with that. It was a student deliberately being disuptive and rude." The event was organized as part of a $500.00 contest ran by the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Augusta.

Mike's prank (and that's ALL that it was, a PRANK) not only involved wearing the shirt on Coke Day, but also in ruining a group photo where all the students stood in the form of the Coke logo. At the last minute when the picture was to be taken, Mike removed an outer shirt and displayed his Pepsi t-shirt. Coke executives seemed to take it better than Gloria Hamilton did. "The kid did what a kid does," said Diana Garza from Coke. "We have people coming into the World Coca-Cola (museum) in Atlanta wearing Pepsi shirts." Get over it, Gloria! Coke did!

Besides, what the hell does ANY cola, Coke OR Pepsi, have to do with public education? Selling out a students right to express his opinion (in this case his choice of soft drink) to win some contest sponsored by a COLA COMPANY is insane! Public schools are not funded by silly contests or multi-national conglomerates! They're funded by American tax dollars. This incident shows us not only the problems of abuse of power by school officials but also what a mess our school system is in when we have to resort to suspending kids for choosing the WRONG COLA!

Pepsi spokesman, Brad Shaw was as amused (if not angered) as we are, it seems over the incident. "It sounds like Mike's obviously a trendsetter with impeccable taste in clothes. We're going to make sure he's got plenty of Pepsi shirts to wear in the future once we track him down."

If you want to tell principal Gloria Hamilton to stick to concentrating on the challenge of educating America's future instead of taking the Pepsi Challenge, you can reach her at this address:

Don't know how true it is, but if it is, it's messed up.

How is it disruptive if even Coke didn't seem to mind that much?

If I were his parents I'd fight this. I mean, wearing a shirt that says "Shit Happens" is one thing, but this is just goign WAY too far.

There is no date on this, but as a GA resident I vaguely remember this happening some time ago. I am sure that it was at least a year ago. Old news

Amen!

The only ones causing a disruption are the ones that are making a big deal about it.

Pepsi = Bad in the south especially Georgia. Southerners are every loyal to southern products Coke being the most extreme example. I almost always drink coke products with the exception of Mountain Dew on occasion.

Agh. This kind of reminds me of my old high school. When I went to school there they didn't have (*too* many :p ) pointless rules... however, now that my younger sister and younger brother are attending that same high school, they have some silly rules when it comes to dress code...

One for example: Students may not wear shirts advertising ANY KIND OF MUSICAL BAND. This includes super hard rock bands, AND even country music.. or even their own musical band (lots of high school boys there are in their own bands).

I thought that was silly.

There was also something like If more than [specified number of students here] students are wearing the same shirt [or other type of clothing] someone has to go home and change, because that means they are in a gang.

WTH? My hometown is a small town, and everyone goes to the same stores.. so why does it matter if someone bought the same shirt as someone else?!???

Sometimes I wonder how they make up rules like this. Do they just need something to sit around and think about? Maybe they should worry about the random kids in school who are always distruptive instead of trying to find another rule to add to the dress code??

To quote a character in The Prince of Tides:

"And that's what I like about the South!"

A Pepsi shirt on Coke Day. Are these people who dished out this punishment on coke?

Too much corporate control of public education.

In Oklahoma whether it's a coke, pepsi, dr. pepper.. if it's a brown cola drink it's called a "coke".

This could be old news or just a repeat incedent. Coke does this kind of thing. Schools have to because they are usually operating under funding levels that they're used to having nowadays -- and Coke pays!

I just can't wait for some fat kid to file a class action suit against his school district on behalf of all the fat kids for them forcing these high-calorie beverages down their throats.

Hell the contest was only for $500!!!

I could see $5000 or $50,000.

Wow and I thought the school I came from was bad, we were not allowed to wear "The Simpsons" t-shirts and shorts were banned from October to May.

KillarneyRose 04-03-2003 08:40 PM

In my high school it was against the rules to go sockless. I guess the sight of so many unclothed ankles was too distracting to some

More on the shorts-they had to be longer than your fingertips when you place your arms by both sides.

Peaches-n-Cream 04-03-2003 09:07 PM

I had a dress code in high school. No jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, sneakers, boots, denim, collarless shirts, skirts above the knee, and probably a few other things that I have forgotten. We most certainly could not wear any shirts with logos like Pepsi or Coke. Ahh the privilege of attending a private school in New York City.
