"Guys want a woman who looks good in a Junior Seau jersey -- not a woman who understands Seau's role in the cover two."

ehehehe...that's funny. :)

Ok, so I know how this lady feels. Men SAY they want a smart, pretty woman who likes sports, but, from my experience, most of them don't really. They're happy to talk witha woman about this or that team's prospects for the year until some girl walks past in some skimpy outfit in the "team colors".

My sister, our friend Debbie, and I are all big sports fans. Baseball, football, soccer you name it. Though, my sister and Debbie like hockey and basketball while those two aren't my faves. SuperBowl?....oh man....we get rowdy.

If anyone thinks that I'm bad, they haven't met Debbie. She routinely puts men to shame when it comes to sports trivia, strategy and stats. She's currently studying for a Master's degree in Sports PR! I think Debbie is just way too over the top for men. Just too knowledgeable for her own good. :)

For me it just ends up being 50/50. Admittedly I try and hold back with the sports talk sometimes so that I don't intimidate the menfolk. Then, I make sure to throw in an intelligent comment here and there so that they don't forget that I'm not stupid. ;) For example, just two weeks ago, I was at the Liverpool v. Leeds fixture - an English soccer match. My boyfriend, a male friend of ours and I had all gotten tickets to go. Before the match, the guy friend asks who we think will score the first goal. They started by agreeing that it would probably be Gerrard. Of course my boyfriend turns to me and says, "Let me guess, you're going to say Michael Owen." He says mocking me in a girly voice, "Ooooo Michael! He's the best! He's just so cute!" I just stared him down and said, "Baros." They both looked at me shocked and then his friend had a somewhat impressed look on his face. They expected me to pick the pretty boy (and I do fancy him!) - they just didn't expect me to pick someone who was capable of it but not as likely. When the roster was called, we found that Baros' injury hadn't cleared up all the way and he wasn't starting. So, I turned back to them, and said, "Well, since Baros is on the bench, it looks like I'll have to go with Michael."

Michael scored first. :p

One time I really burned a couple guys in my class. They went on and on about baseball every day. One day I piped in with a comment which they disagreed with. At first they included me but then they started to get intimidated. So, they decided to try and sports babble me out of the conversation. That didn't work so we went tit for tat until finally he got fed up. He finally resorted to what many men do: "The Quiz". How many of you sports lovin' ladies have gotten The Quiz from a man?? He blazenly turned to me, smirked and asked me something which had nothing to do with the conversation at hand - "Who played in the 1984 World Series?"

I looked back at him, smirked and retorted, "Padres vs. Tigers. Detroit won."

I've had guys get scared of my sports knowledge, I've also had guys really dig it. When I was living in SoCal, I once went by myself to a sports bar in the middle of the day so I could watch the satellite feed of a European soccer final. There were only THREE of us sitting in that corner watching the game. Two guys and myself. There I was sitting in my jersey staring at the screen. A REALLY good looking guy sitting next to me was intrigued by the fact that I was this girl all kitted up and watching a game that no one in town knew or cared about. He spent the rest of the second half talking to me and trying to chat me up. I was flattered but a bit annoyed that he didn't wait until the end of the match 'cos I wanted to watch! Anyway, he thought it was so cool that he asked me out and we dated for a while.

On the other hand, some men refuse to allow me into the conversation or ignore whatever I say.

I keep telling my boyfriend that I'm a rockin' girlfriend 'cause I won't give him grief for watching sports - I watch them with him! He likes to discuss the game with me and doesn't mind me yelling at the screen every now and again.

And yeah, I make a kickin' guacamole. :D

.....Kelly :)

I'm just glad my husband isn't into sports at all..that way he doesn't have to feel 'threatened' by my sports fanaticism.

White_Chocolate 04-02-2003 10:32 AM

hey, my degree is in sports pr
but i'm doing it to meet the players
not to sit around and talk about sports

Mz. Sports Luva 04-02-2003 11:06 AM

Yep, it's true

I can definately relate to this article. Especially the explaining part. The majority of the men that I've dated or know thinks it's cool as hades that I love to watch & know sports.

However, my EX was too upset that I'd rather watch football on Saturday than go to the park & walk the dog! LOL. He was definately threatened by my interest.

I think in general, guys could be threatened by a woman knowing more about any subject than them, especially one as prevalent in the male culture as sports.

I'll be the first to admit, I love watching sports, but never could rattle off JD Drew's RBI percentage from last year or any facts like that. But my sister? My God, she's like a Sports Illustrated Almanac. And she has guys around her all the time that love that kind of thing, so to each their own, I guess.

It has very little to do with whether a girl has spors knowledge. It has a lot to do with the fact that most girls with a lot of sports knowledge are Tom Boys.

Tom Bys intimidate men, not girls that are good at sports trivia.

I am QUITE the girlie girl and I LOVE my hockey!

I also like beer and play pool. I still like pretty things and wear skirts when the mood sways.

I agree with agger_rob. Men are just treatened by women who know a lot about something they think they shouldn't know about. We should know about recipes and what mousse leaves less frizz than others. Heaven forbid we know what it means to be 'offside!!'

Men just want to explain to us feeble women what the deal is with four downs, or why there was an icing call. (And yes, I DO realize that those are two different sports).

I don't know that I'd feel 'threatened'. I'd probably love it if my girlfriend's eyes didn't glaze over when I mentioned football.. Or she wouldn't feel neglected when I was watching a football game. She tries to pretend she's interested but usually ends up trying to talk to me and becoming frustrated that I don't respond:D

James 04-20-2003 12:54 AM

 Odd I wouldn't call you a girlie girl at all lol. . . and I have talked with you extensively.

LOL.
Okay James. If by 'extensively' you mean 4 minute conversations once a month, then yes, you must know me inside out.
