ZTA and Z Phi B

Hello Fellow Zeta Ladies,

Today during activity hour we stepped with the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta which is an African American sorority. I am a black female and found it VERY important to do the step show because it shows greek unity between NPC and NPHC. Do any of you have events with greek organizations that are NOT traditionally white? If so what? I attend the campus of Old Dominion University where there are students from every contintent. Just like my chapter (Iota Sigma) ODU is full of diversity.

When I was in school, the NPHC groups didn't want anything to do with the NPC groups. We thought it was funny when non-Greeks would accuse the NPC and IFC groups of discrimination, because the African-American system was so strong on our campus, they would have been insulted to be asked to be part of "our" groups.

Things have definitely changed for the better. Now they have a talent show which pairs a white fraternity with a black sorority and vice versa. I've heard the competition is strong and the show is amazing. Some of the most stereotypically prissy sorority girls are learning "steps"! I'd love to see it some day. It's a way to show how diverse groups can work together, learn about each other and raise funds.

Relations between NPHC orgs and NPC/IFC orgs on my campus are great. Since our school is mostly non-Greek, we figured if we all banded together, the entire Greek system would be stronger.

The girls from Z Phi B love us (I guess it's that whole "we all zetas" thing). We have had a mixer with them, which also included Phi Beta Sigma, Delta Sigma Theta, and Pi Kappa Phi. That was my sophomore year, and it was the first NPHC/NPC/IFC mixer ever on our campus. We've also done service projects with Z Phi B as well.

This past November, AKA hosted Battle of the Party Walks, in which NPHC fraternities were paired with IFC fraternities and NPHC sororities were paired with NPC sororities and we all competed. It was so much fun! We were paired with Delta Sigma Theta (and we won!), and the Zeta Phi Betas were all mad because the Deltas "stole OUR girls." Through that event, I got to be really good friends with a lot of Deltas and we still hang out a lot.

This Saturday night is the NPHC Step Show, and it is a HUGE event. While IFC and NPC orgs are welcome to participate, it's kinda understood that we leave the stepping to the NPHC kids. There is just no way we could compete!! The Deltas have been practicing since November!! But a couple of my sisters and I are going to show our support (and besides, I love going to step shows!).

I think good relations between NPHC orgs and NPC/IFC orgs is very important. First, it can make a campus's entire Greek system stronger. Second, the NPHC orgs do fun stuff that us white kids don't always do!! I grew up in a place that was very racially mixed. When I came to Charleston, I didn't like the almost "voluntary segregation" that seemed to pervade the campus. I mean, I know it's the South, but really. That has begun to change over the past four years, and I am all for it. Yay diversity!! :D

It would be nice if our campus was diverse enough to have NPHC groups but we don't

We use to do a spaghetti dinner with Z Phi B called "Zeta Spaghetti Dinner". I'm not exactly sure why we stopped.

We have a pretty good relationship with the NPHC organizations. During greek week last year, we were paired with Kappa Sig as well as Phi Beta Sigma. They were great guys and we had lots of fun.

The ZPhiB's on our campus are really great. They were our steppin coaches this year and on the night of the performance they all showed up. They also came out to do line dance durring Greek Week and they had signs that said "Z Phi B ZTA it don't matter as long as you're a Zeta". Since then we have planned a sisterhood with them and we ordered t-shirts that have their letters on 1 sleeve and our letters on the other and on the back it says "You mess with 1 ZETA you mess with us all". :D

Well, my last reply to this thread was like 2 years ago. Wow.

What's funny now, though, is there is a girl (well, jeez, woman - she's in her 30s and has 2 kids) here at work that is in the process of alumnae initiating into ZPhiB. So we like to chat about Zeta stuff all the time. We're everywhere!
