Question about AGD's armorial bearings?

Hi Sandy (OohTeenyWahine) and the rest of the AGD's...
I have a question about AGD's armorial bearings?

Someone (an AGD) once told me that AGD has two "versions" of its armorial bearings (i.e. crest), an American and a Canadian.
The American would be this one:
http://campus.murraystate.edu/org/alpha.gam/crest.gif

and the Canadian would be:

http://www.zetachi.net/images/can8dn.gif
(i.e. The "knight's helmet" is removed)
Why is this? Is it because Canada still has a monarchy? Just wondering! Thanks! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

----------------------
A few minutes later...
Okay, in surfing around to find "both versions" of the crest, I found this blurb that answered my own question! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif ...

The Canadian Armorial Bearings is different from the first one in that it is missing only the royal helmut. Because of the affiliation of Canada with the British monarch, the Canadian emblem does not include a royal helmut

Kind of interesting.... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Happy to help (i.e. discover nifty facts about GLOs) right along with you! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Hey, I just thought of something.. since I am a Delta Gamma, we kind of share a similar flower....AGD has red and buff roses, and DG has the "cream coloured rose"...
would you say buff and cream coloured roses are similar? Or is buff more like pale, pale, pale pink? (sort of cream color, with a pinky'ness to it?)

From AGD website:
http://www.alphagammadelta.org/rose.jpg

From DG website:

Oh...and we share 2 letters too...Gamma and Delta (or Delta and Gamma http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif )
How can you tell that I am bored at work? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

You're right, I probably would have never noticed had you not informed us! Sarah, I too like to brag about the cool AGD facts I discover (usually here on GC)!

Does anyone have any idea how there came to be two crests? What I mean is, did Tau chapter say "hey we can't have the helmet on there..." or Emily purposely design two since we were founded to become international???

also CutiePie, buff is a pale yellow, not pink http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

I think Delta Gamma pretty much uses a pale yellow or white rose as the cream coloured "Delta Gamma" rose (to my knowledge) doesn't exist anymore. It was specially bred for DG, and it died out...oh well! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

As for the 2 crests: I would suspect that upon the colonization of the 1st Canadian AGD chapter, the need for the "non-helmeted" crest arose and it was developed soon after?
If you find the answer, please do post it!

CutiePie, a yellow rose is often substituted because "true buff" roses are often hard to find.

OohTeenyWahine...
How is it going at UH?
I wanted to ask you...are any other NPC groups interested in coming to UH?

Just wondering...are any of the local sororities looking to affiliate with an NPC org., or would an NPC group have to start from (for lack of a better word) "scratch"?

How did AGD start at UH? Was it a local sorority first, or did AGD come to UH, generate interest and it took off from there?

Please let me know..I'm curious! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Things at UH are fabulous as we are gearing up for Fall Recruitment 2001! We're holding an Officer Training Retreat before school begins...and after that's done we'll be holding Recruitment Training School and Work Week!

As of now we haven't heard anything about other NPC groups colonizing on campus. So right now, we're focusing on our chapter strengths.

As for AGD in Hawaii, the Honolulu Alumnae Club (later Hawaii Alumnae Club) was established here in 1936, 55 years before AGD colonized at UH. April 1991 was the date of International Reunion Day, and it was announced here that Alpha Gamma Delta was colonizing at UH. The hard work and dedication of our alumnae resulted in the initiation of 50+ members into the chartering class. This was a mixture of collegians, alumnae initiates, and legacies!

If AGD could start from scratch at my campus, I'm sure that another NPC group can too...but it takes a dedicated group of alumnae to make it happen.

Last week at Convention I had the privilege to meet the Sisters that had key roles in our Colonization and Installation teams. It was a special time and I know I'll always be grateful to them! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey, that's cool! Thanks for such an informative reply.
I had a little looksy on Delta Gamma's website and when you go here... http://www.deltagamma.org/rosters/search.htm
you can type in a state, so I selected HAWAII and presto gazinga! ...it looks like there are maybe 20 DGs in the Hawaiian Islands, 7 of which are in Honolulu...That would be cool to see another NPC group come to UH, especially Delta Gamma (not that I'm biased WHATSOEVER http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif LOL!!)

CutiePie2000 07-13-2001 12:22 AM

LeslieAGD,
If you go to Canadian AGD chapters, you can see the difference there...I would suspect that American chapters may not have noticed the difference as it doesn't pertain to them?

University of Manitoba chapter: http://pages.sprint.ca/alphagam/

University of Toronto chapter: http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark.../tau_gree.html

University of Western Ontario: http://www.zetachi.net/symbols.html

If you want tonnes of Canadian AGD links, just go here: http://www.canadiangreeks.com/directory/alphagam.html
and happy clicking!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

CP2000, you are SO on the ball!

You are right, our Canadian sisters use the Coat of Arms that do not have the helmet because it is contrary to the rulings of the British government for anyone except the sovereign (in this case-Queen Elizabeth II) to bear the Royal Helmet.

Oh my gosh. As a sister from Canada I was wondering why our coat of arms was slightly different, I couldn't put my finger on what it was though! That is so neat!

...

And sorry to everyone for bumping a ten year old thread, but I think it's neat enough to merit it?
