Did you know that Emily Helen Butterfield (who by the way I have a slight obession over) designed TKE's coat of arms and that is why they have some similarities to ours??? Interesting huh??

LOL...you have an obsession with Emily? I guess you have good reason to...she was an awesome lady.

Anyways, I remember telling one of the TKE brothers that...and he didn't want to believe me. His president even told him it was the truth...but luckily there was an issue of the Quarterly available...and that shut him up.

I do actually! I know I think I am the only member of my chapter that still remembers a founders name other than Georgia Dickover! Emily is SOO COOL! Every time I hear something new about her, I like her even more! She seemed like she was the most progressive of the founders in terms of womens lib, not that the rest weren't!! I'm a dork, what can I say??? :-)

The only 2 I could remember is Georgia and Emily. I have made my daughter and my grand-daughter learn everything I know about Emily!! It's a little sad really :-)

I thought I'd resurrect this older post and ask how other chapters learn about our founders and remember them?

I know our chapter just memorized all of them. And, like other chapters, most of us only remember Georgia and Emily, so if anyone has any other ideas on ways to remember the founders for life, I'd love to hear it!

Here is my Founder's Story...

Marguerite Shepard was our "first" Founder and first Phi Beta Kappa. Then you have her sister, Estelle Shepard Beswick who was the first Editor of the Quarterly and furthered our sisterhood as the first Extension Chairwoman. Then you begin with "alpha"...Alpha Chapter that is, whose first President was Jennie Titus Smith Morris. After Alpha comes Beta and Ethel Brown Distin was not only the second President of Alpha, but instrumental in installing Beta. Then comes everyone's "favorite founder", Georgia Dickover, who was our Historian. We also have another Georgia, Georgia Otis Chipman, who was the first Business Manager of the Quarterly. And when you have business, you have to get out into the community, so Mary Louise Snider was our first Missionary. And when you go out into the community, you need a place to stay so Grace Mosher Harter was our Grand Hostess. And sometimes when you visit people, they have kids, so Edith MacConnell Hickok had the first Alpha Gam baby. And when you have a baby, you have to sing it to sleep, so Flora Knight Mayer (think Florance Nightingale) wrote a lot of the early songs. And last, but not least, Emily Helen Butterfield, who wrote our Purpose and designed our Armoral Bearings, Alpha's Chapter House, and the AGD Summer Camp buildings.

Emily also designed Zeta Tau Alpha's coat of arms.

Her book College Fraternity Heraldry is long out of print. I got my copy in 1973 at a clearance sale price--I think the publisher was cleaning out the warehouse--and I won't part with it!!!

BTW, Katey -- similarities between TKE's armorial bearings and ours aren't as much because EHB designed both, but because EHB had studied heraldry and knew the correct way to do things.

Thanks Emily, I'm glad you liked my story! I am soooo mad though because they did a contest in the Quarterly a while ago where you had to make up a way to remember the Founders. If I would have known, I would have entered!
