I have a whole bunch of questions that Iknow won't get answered today? What's the difference between groups like Mason, Elks, Eastern Starr and the Divine Nine? Can you plege one of the divine nine groups and be in the other organizations? Also, how do you determine what sorority or fraternity to pledge? Maybe I should be more specific- What if your confused about two sororities, both catch your eye how should go about choosing the right one?

As far as groups like Elks, Moose, Masons, etc.... you should be able to join those organizations, should you choose to do so - the limitation would be on joining an NPC/NIC GLO, you can't join a second GLO. I don't believe the NPHC orgs ("Divine Nine") are different in this regard, but, I would imagine someone who is affiliated with those organizations can tell you better than I.

Elks etc., are not affiliated with colleges or universities - they are private organizations. I am a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in addition to LXA. I could join the Elks (probably will due to family pressure). The only possible difference might be with the Acacia college fraternity, which is affiliated in some way with the Masonic lodge - there may be some limitation there, but, I'm not a member of either, so I can't say for sure.

Nope, we're not any different. I know of several members in each of the NPHC orgs who are also Masons or Eastern Stars.

As fas as choosing the best sorority for you, that's something only you can determine. I suggest you get to know the members of each sorority and what the organizations do before you make your final decision (Members of the Latina and NPC Sororities, please correct me if I'm mistaken) and consider what you've seen and heard very carefully. Membership in the "Divine Nine" orgs and some NPC orgs (I'm not sure about the Latina orgs) are lifetime commitments, and we take that commitment very seriously.

It is always to your best interest to get to know the members of the organization you are interested in. Membership in a LGLO is a lifetime committment as well.

Membership in ALL NPC organizations is a lifetime committment. Whether or not a woman chooses to be active after she graduates is her own business, but once she is initiated as an Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Zeta, Sigma Kappa, or Alpha Omicron Pi, she is a member until the day she dies. I know there is a pervading belief that NPC membership ends upon graduation, but it's just not true.

And yes, it is possible for those interested in NPC membership to research and pick out the organization which is best for her, at both the collegiate and alumnae levels.

As a proud Eastern Star, who is very active within her chapter, I can say that I am allowed to be a Star, and show interest in a BGLO. In fact, my Star work enhances my natural abilities and opportunities to serve in my community.

Yes, you can join a group like the masons and a BGLO.

As far as what org is best for you that is something you must judge for yourself. I love being a Sigma Gamma Rho because I have researched my org and realized that they are the best for me. You should do your research and then go with your heart.

Much like traveling, in that you cannot say that one area is better than another; you cannot say that one fraternity is better than another. I strongly feel that every Greek organization has a strong point that makes that group unique. (Of course, I favor the fraternity to which I belong). I remember when I was pledging, the quesion I asked was, "with which group do I have the most friends?" I asked myself which group seemed to be the most reputable and dignified. It is about finding a group with interests similar to yours.

Many of the early fraternities (including Delta Tau Delta) were formed by active Masons. In fact, many of the parts of many fraternity rituals came from Masonry. And the rituals of many (if not most) Greek organizations tend to be very similar.

I chose not to be a Mason, although my grandfather, father and several uncles are/were.

I know that the Masons are very different from GLO's. yes the rituals seem very similar, however they are not. The masons are a very secret society with a pentalty for ever releasing the secrets. Therefore, nobody really knows exactly what goes on within that society. I know that my religious catholic background forbids me to ever be part of or enter into a masonic temple. as for the rest i am not sure. i am pretty well versed in the jist of he masons because of research. For me the sorority is a part of my life, but not the master of my life. It will never be above my religion and if I had to choose between the two my religion would definately be first. (Not that anyone is asking me to do so, but sometimes these organizations require an above all placement in the lives of its members)thanks!!
