Are there any good dictators?

So, are there any "good" dictators in the world? Is this even possible? Or is
exposure to such great power just too much for one man to handle without
checks and balances?

checks and balances are necessary. even the most "well behaved" dictator can have too much power. no one person should have the right to the only and final say when it comes to the lives of millions

No, No, No!!!

But if I was a dicktater, I would try to be a good one! :)

A bad Dictator is a Despot, well maybe?

Well, your question, what would you look for! Or not?

Uh no!!!

I don't think it's actually possible.

If you think about it the only reason someone is a dictator is because they have staved off anyone else's grabs for power. How do you do that? More power.

Excercizing power is never a pretty thing and not many people will like you for it.

Optimist Prime 03-27-2003 11:46 PM

No. No good Dictators. But there have been good kings. What is difference? I'm the Emporer. Or First Concul. :) I'll be good.

Yes there have been, and yes there can be.

Optimist Prime 03-27-2003 11:47 PM

But I disagree with the thought of unchecked power.

Optimist Prime 03-27-2003 11:47 PM

But anything is possible.

The history of 'good dictators' was written by who? DICTATORS! Rome was ruled by them for centuries. You hear they were essentially good... but on the other hand, the human atrocities committed under their watch? Who were the people killed in the colloseum? Their enemies. No different than Mr Hussein...
